District Nowshera: 29-31 May, 2023

NIDM Conducted three days training and Simulation Exercise (SimEx) from 29-31 May, 2023 at District Nowshera (KP). The SimEx was attended by all district level stakeholders including DDMA, Govt departments, media, academia, industry representatives and officials from NGOs. Multiple scenarios for potential summer contingencies were simulated during the SimEx, including flash floods, landslides, and riverine floods. Syndicates were formed to represent specific roles like the PDMA, DDMA, media and the local community.

Ghizer (GB): 10-12 May, 2023

NDIM conducted three-day training and simulation exercise (SIMEX) on summer contingencies in Gahkuch, District Ghizer from May 10 to May 12, 2023. The workshop witnessed the presence of over 55 participants from DDMA, academia, district line departments, industry, media and humanitarian stakeholders. The SIMEX covered multiple scenarios of summer contingencies that the district may experience, such as GLOF, precipitation-generated flooding, and landslides, with multiple syndicates representing specific roles like GBDMA, DDMA, local community, media, and humanitarian support syndicates.

NIDM conducted One- Day Workshop on Coastal Hazards in Quetta. Workshop was conducted in collaboration with BUITEMS QUETTA and PDMA Balochistan. Around 200 representatives from provincial government departments, Balochistan Civil Services Academy, UN agencies, universities, media and humanitarian partners attended the workshop.

Gilgit; 8 May, 2023: NDMA Conducts First Ever Workshop of NIDM in GB on Local Needs & Gaps Analysis of Disaster Management

NDMA’s National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) conducted it’s first-ever workshop on local needs and gaps analysis in Gilgit today. The workshop was aimed to assess the region's disaster management needs and find solutions to its gaps for emergency preparedness. Vice-chancellors of Karakoram International University (KIU) and University of Baltistan, Sakardu (UOBS) along with their head of departments, members of faculty, GBDMA, students, NGOs, government departments, media and members of the Armed Forces participated in the session.

Chairman NDMA, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik virtually addressed the workshop and emphasized the need for scientific and research-driven emergency preparedness modules and mock exercises to strengthen resilience against climatic hazards and tourism security during emergencies in GB. He also highlighted the role of community awareness, education, and engagement through multiple communication channels, private partners, and regional NGOs.

Chairman NDMA also responded to questions of participants and acknowledged to incorporating the session's recommendations into national Preparedness and Response System. He also suggested coordination with global universities and think tanks to facilitate knowledge sharing, experiences and best practices related to disaster management.

Chairman NDMA said that through proactive approaches for disaster preparedness and response planning, we can ensure that every community in Pakistan is equipped to handle any crisis that may arise. He reaffirmed NDMA’s commitment to multi-hazard preparedness nationwide and spirit of cooperation among all stakeholders for a disaster-resilient Pakistan.

Islamabad; 4 April 2023: 1st Connect Conference of National Think Tank on Disaster Management (NIDM) held at NDMA

National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) held first connect conference with all Rectors/ Vice-Chancellors, Heads of Departments and representatives of 25 public and private universities. Chairman NDMA, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik presided over the session and outlined follow-up strategies for NIDM.

The session was mandated to develop collaborative framework for NIDM to invest into the country's disaster management the country's disaster management capabilities and strengthen connections with local responders, industry, academia as well as global partners.

Chairman NDMA recognized academia's role in mitigating and reducing disaster risk and emphasized the need for localized preparedness regimes, gap analysis, and assessing relief and recovery needs during emergencies and disasters. He urged academia to develop policy recommendations and solutions for PDMAs and DDMAs to enhance effective disaster management in their respective regions and suggested clustering the universities by regions to promote DM research and data management nationwide.

University representatives commended NDMA's involvement of academia as a constructive measure for enhancing disaster management in the country. They presented their own initiatives for community awareness, disaster management research, and training, and urged NDMA/NIDM to lead the development of a curriculum for the discipline that addresses current requirements.

Chairman NDMA acknowledged the feedback and committed to incorporating the session's recommendations into the scoping of NIDM. He also suggested organizing symposiums and expos to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and experiences related to disaster management.

Islamabad; 8-9 March 2023: Two-Day Workshop on Local Needs Gap Analysis and Framework of Remodelled National Disaster Preparedness & Response at NUTECH.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)’s research branch, National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) held two-day workshop on local needs gap analysis and framework of Remodelled National Disaster Preparedness & Response at National University of Technology (NUTECH), Islamabad today. This is first leg of workshop series based on multi-hazards preparedness nationwide being organized by NIDM.

Chairman NDMA Lt General Inam Haider Malik and NUTECH Rector Lt General (R) Moazzam Ejaz inaugurated the first session.

The workshop aims at identifying gaps in disaster management and chalk out caliberated preparedness regime according to Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Pakistan.

Rector NUTECH, in his welcome note, commended NDMA’s futuristic approach towards disaster preparedness and response system. He remarked that NUTECH would be key partner with NDMA in initiating national discourse for identifying lacunae through lessons learnt during Floods 2022 and earmarking research areas to find out indigenous solutions for better disaster management in the country.

Chairman NDMA discussed the contours of Remodelled National Preparedness and Response System. He highlighted that digitally updated National Emergencies & Operations Center (NEOC) would collaborate data for early warning system, generating alerts & consequently AI based decision making for proactive management of disaster or emergencies in Pakistan.

Chairman NDMA emphasized on research-driven modules for emergency preparedness and mock exercises to build national resilience towards climatic hazards. In this regard, he informed that NDMA is conducting simulation exercises countrywide with support of all stakeholders starting in third week of March 2023.

Workshop was attended by academic professionals, PMD, Rescue 1122, NGOs, INGOs and other relevant government departments.
