Pakistan Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an outcome of contentious deliberations of all member States that have been ratified by Head of States of the countries on September 25th to 27th, 2015. SDGs are transformative, universal and right-based development agenda for developed, developing and least developed countries with 17 goals, 169 targets and approximately 240 indicators (depending on the country context).

In February 2016, the National Assembly of Pakistan passed a unanimous resolution to adopt the 2030 Agenda (SDGs) as the national development agenda. For SDGs, both federal and provincial governments have shown much needed “political will” and “ownership” of development agenda that was missing during Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) implementation. The Parliamentary Task Forces at the federal and provincial levels were constituted to oversee and support SDGs related legislation and establish SDG Secretariat for enhance coordination.

The Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform in collaboration with Provincial Planning and Development Departments and UNDP have launched a national project “Mainstreaming, Acceleration and Policy Support (MAPS) for SDGs.

The project focuses on localization of SDGs at national and provincial levels and establishment of institutional infrastructure for effective coordination and implementation. The national project on SDGs focusing more on addressing governance bottlenecks through effective, integrated and coordinated institutional framework. SDG Support Units are established at federal and provincial/regional levels to integrate and mainstream SDGs in policy framework, develop and strengthen monitoring and reporting mechanisms, resource mapping both human and financial for SDGs and foster development process through use of information technology and innovative approaches.
