Switzerland is quietly becoming one of Europe’s key data hubs. And most people have no idea how much infrastructure is already behind the digital services we use every day.

More than 120 data centers are already operating across the country, with new facilities under construction. Companies are drawn by a combination of political stability, reliable electricity, strong data protection and fast connectivity.

At the same time, the AI boom is accelerating demand for computing power.

Zurich alone now hosts more than 30 data centers and is increasingly positioning itself as a hub for AI-related activities. Behind every cloud service, AI model, video call or search query, there is physical infrastructure running 24/7. But there’s another side to this story.

Data centers consume huge amounts of electricity and water to keep servers running and cool. As the sector expands, pressure on energy systems is growing worldwide.

In Switzerland, some operators are already experimenting with ways to reduce that impact:

♻️ Closed cooling systems

🏙️ Waste heat reused to heat buildings

☀️ Solar panels installed on rooftops
And at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano, the “Alps” supercomputer uses water from Lake Lugano for cooling while supporting climate modelling, weather forecasting and advanced AI applications.
The future of AI is not only about algorithms.
It’s also about energy, infrastructure and places to store and process data.
Would you trust your data to a country like Switzerland? 👀

: 🇨🇭 Four languages, countless literary and cultural traditions, and one country that made multilingualism not just a fact of life but a legal commitment enshrined in the Languages Act. German is spoken by more than 60% of the population, French is the main language of the Romandie region, Italian dominates in Ticino, and Romansh, a Rhaeto-Romanic language with Latin origins, survives in parts of Graubünden. Every Swiss child is required to learn at least one other national language at school, because Switzerland understood early on that a shared country can be built on different languages.

How a mountain hut became a high-altitude research lab 🏔️🇨🇭

Perched at 2,883 meters in the Swiss Alps, the Monte Rosa Hut was developed by ETH Zurich as an innovative alpine building designed to operate in extreme conditions. Its distinctive shape and reflective surface allow it to integrate into its environment while optimising performance.

Beyond its architectural design, the hut functions as a living laboratory. It produces around 90% of its own energy using solar technology and continuously collects data on energy consumption, climate and building performance.

This combination of research and infrastructure makes it a model for sustainable construction in challenging environments.

: In the 16th century, Jean Calvin banned the wearing of jewellery in Geneva. Goldsmiths and jewellers, suddenly without work, turned their skills to watchmaking. This pivot launched an industry that still defines Switzerland today. ⌚ By the 1960s, Switzerland produced 60% of the world's watches. Today, the country remains the world's largest exporter of classic watches by value, with the industry worth over CHF 24 billion and half of all exports heading to Asia. Precision was never just a product – It’s a national identity.

How Switzerland helps detect storms before they are visible from Earth ⛈️🇨🇭

To better anticipate extreme weather, scientists now monitor the atmosphere continuously from space. Europe’s MTG satellite, developed under the ESA - European Space Agency, provides more frequent and detailed data than previous systems.

At the core of this technology is a Swiss-developed (CSEM) mechanism that ensures exceptional stability of the satellite’s instruments. This precision allows scientists to detect subtle atmospheric changes that would otherwise remain invisible.

The first data is already being used by meteorological services, helping improve early warning systems and allowing authorities more time to prepare for extreme weather events.
