The International Day of Human Space Flight is an annual event, held on 12 April each year, to celebrate the first human space flight by Yuri Gagarin.
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut who became the first human to journey into outer space. Travelling in the Vostok 1 capsule, Gagarin completed an entire orbit of Earth on 12 April 1961.
Junior I students paid tribute to the first human in space by indulging in variety of activities.
To further their interest in space studies, they borrowed space-themed books from the school library for the week, while also recalling their ORT reader "Red Planet", they read in Early Years.
Students discussed the model of "Artificial Wheel of Gravity" which they built earlier in class. They also observed the model of solar system, recalled the names of planets and learned about their rotation around the sun.
After that, they went to school’s ICT laboratory, where they explored Nasa Kids Club - a great introductory resource for young students exploring space. (https://www.nasa.gov/kidsclub/index.html)
They designed their own rockets and spaceships while working on the Paint app.
In their art class, they made paper rockets and rocket launchers and enjoyed flying them off in the school courtyard.
To conclude the day, the students wrote interesting write-ups about their favorite planets and shared them with their peers in the class room.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is integral and should be inculcated in children right from an early age. In today’s world, with fewer outdoor opportunities coupled with reliance on unhealthy, processed, and junk food, obesity has become one of the leading factors raising morbidity rates throughout the world.
Students from Junior I learnt about healthy and unhealthy food in their science lesson.
They learnt how to organize food into 5 main food groups using a US based model: MyPlate, comprising of vegetables, fruits, grains, proteins and dairy products. They were introduced to the nutritional value of each foodgroup in school auditorium.
The MyPlate Plan shows food group targets – what and how much to eat staying within each individual’s calorie allowance, taking personalized health metrics into account. MyPlate is the official site of the USA Agriculture Department (USAD) (visit: https://www.myplate.gov ) that guides its readers/users to navigate along a healthy eating life style and build it throughout his/her lifetime. MyPlate offers ideas and tips to help us create an eating style that meets our individual nutritional and health needs. Its an excellent resource for recipes and tips for eating healthy on a budget and is available as an application of mobile devices.
The students visited the school refectory and sorted their lunch according to different food groups. They learnt how to plan their daily lunch menu comprising of healthy food groups; as well as committing to make healthy eating choices a part of their lifestyle.

One of the key risks amongst peer to peer interaction in a school environment is that of bullying.
At Academus, we promote a culture of respect, integrity, accepting differences, and inculcating mutual love amongst students. We believe that talking about the negative implications of bullying prevents it to pe*****te in the school culture. Furthermore, it builds a safe school environment for education to flow.
Our Anti-Bullying Policy is in- built into our Child Protection Policy at school, which we take extremely seriously and includes: (1) talking about examples of bullying practices (2) opening communication lines to listen to children and understanding their concerns (3) modeling ourselves for children to mirror us using kindness and compassion in our routine.
As technology progresses, cyber-bullying has been on the rise, making way to disrespectful comments and trolls. We believe inculcating ideals such as anti-bullying policy will help our students grow into model citizens of the community.
Coming back, our Kindergarteners, made a very solemn Anti Bullying Pledge at school, which was drafted as follows:
‘I will not use my hands for hitting, or my words for hurting others. I will only use them for helping’.
A small, yet impactful, step towards building a friendly, co-existing, diverse and accepting environment in our community.
