Forest Types of Pakistan.
Pakistan has a great variety of forests because of its different climates, elevations, rainfall, and landscapes. From coastal mangroves to high mountain forests, each type has an important role in protecting nature and supporting communities.
1. Tropical Forests
Mangrove Forests – found along the coastal areas, especially the Indus Delta.
Thorn Forests – common in dry areas of Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan.
Dry Deciduous Forests – occur in relatively dry regions where trees shed their leaves during dry periods.
2. Subtropical Forests
Chir Pine Forests – mainly found in the lower mountain ranges of northern Pakistan.
Broad-leaved Evergreen Forests – occur in warmer subtropical mountain areas.
3. Temperate Forests
Moist Temperate Forests – found in cooler, wetter mountain regions.
Dry Temperate Forests – occur in colder and relatively dry valleys and mountain slopes.
4. Alpine & Sub-Alpine Forests
Found at high elevations of the Himalayas, Hindu Kush and Karakoram.
These forests include species such as juniper, birch and high-altitude conifers and provide important habitat for wildlife.
Why are these forests important?
They help combat climate change, protect soil and water, support biodiversity, reduce floods and erosion, provide livelihoods, and maintain ecological balance.
