Panelist: Prof. Dr, Zaidi

Prof. Dr. Zaidi is a renowned academic and political economist with over 35 years of teaching and research experience in Pakistan and abroad. He has served as a faculty member in renowned institutions across the globe, including Columbia University, Johns Hopkins, IBA, Karachi and the University of Karachi. He is a political economist with interests in political economy, development, the social sciences more generally, and increasingly, history.
He has written over 75 academic articles in international journals and as chapters in books. Amongst his books, are: Military, Civil Society and Democratization in Pakistan (2011), The New Development Paradigm: Papers on Institutions, NGOs, Gender and Local Government (1999), and Pakistan's Economic and Social Development: The Domestic, Regional and Global Context (2004). His recent books include Issues in Pakistan's Economy: A Political Economy Perspective published by Oxford University Press in 2015, and a co-edited volume entitled New Perspectives on Pakistan's Political Economy: State, Class and Social Change, published by Cambridge University Press in April 2019.

Panelist: Mahim Maher

Mahim Maher is the editor for digital properties at SAMAA TV. She worked as a print journalist for 20 years at Daily Times, The Express Tribune and the Dawn group. As an editor who ran the Karachi metropolitan sections she developed an interest in the city's urban infrastructure and expansion.

Keynote Address & Panel Discussion by Arif Hasan – ‘Issues in Karachi’s Recent Past’

Arif Hasan is a Pakistani architect and planner, activist, teacher, social researcher and writer. He studied architecture at the Oxford Polytechnic, worked in Europe in architect’s offices, and on his return to Karachi in 1968, established an independent practice which slowly evolved into dealing with national and international urban planning and development issues. He has taught at Pakistani and European universities and lectured widely both in the North and the South.

Introductory address by Dr. Asma Ibrahim, President Karachi Conference Foundation (KCF)

Dr. Asma Ibrahim is Director, Museum & Art Gallery, State Bank of Pakistan. She is an eminent scholar in the fields of Archaeology, Museology and Conservation. She completed her Post Doctoral Fellowship in the US in Archaeological Chemistry. Her researches in Human Skeleton remains have brought some interesting questions to fore; prompting new enquiries. Dr. Ibrahim established the first Monetary Museum of Pakistan, which has earned international acclaim, and is rated as the best in the field. Her doctoral research on coins of Alexander and his descendents has re-written the history of Greeks in Sindh and Balochistan, given new angle to the studies of Indo-Greek Coins.
Dr Ibrahim has actively worked in the field of Archaeology and Museums for nearly three decades and has many acclaimed projects of Excavations and Explorations in Sindh and Balochistan to her credit. Her recent projects include conservation of VarunDev temple under the grant of the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, for which she is leading her SEAS Pakistan NGO team. She has to her credit the first-ever Braille Guide Book and tactile objects for the visually impaired visiting the State Bank Museum.
Dr Ibrahim is serving on several consultative committees for the Government of Sindh, Board of Governors of different educational Institutions, and is a Founder Member of the Sindh Exploration & Adventure Society as well as of the Centre for Archaeological & Environmental Research, Terracotta, a project under Zohra Ibrahim Foundation. She is also the only Pakistani member of International Scientific Committee of Glass, and is carrying out research on the provenance of glass in the region of Sindh with special reference to Banbhore. She is also a member of Karachi Art Biennale Trust 2017. She has authored several research articles, catalogues and books. Her research projects are documented by BBC (Horizon), Discovery Channel, ZDF and BBC Channel-4, in the form of documentaries.
