Renowned Polish mountaineer Waldemar Kowalewski was injured on Broad Peak after an avalanche struck the mountain this morning.

Initial reports indicate that three climbers were seen high on the mountain, with one above the slide area while two others appeared to pull themselves out of avalanche.

The avalanche was observed between Camp II and Camp III, according to mountaineer Lukasz Supergan, who reported the incident in his Instagram post.

Later, it was confirmed that one of the climbers was Kowalewski, who suffered a leg fracture above Camp II.

Kowalewski is said to be in stable condition in a tent, at 6500 meters above sea level, which is approximately 330 meters above Camp II. “There were two friends with him: Jarek and Hassan. Jarek is with him while Hassan came down to Camp II for supplies.” Lukasz wrote in his Instagram post.

The team’s liaison officer has already notified the Pakistan Army, but worsening weather may prevent a rescue effort. It also remains uncertain whether helicopter flights could be operated at that altitude.
