🌍 PICOBELLO – Piloting Collaborative Ways to Better Living Locally 🌍

PICOBELLO is an international project co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg Europe programme, aimed at supporting sustainable and innovative regional development.

🤝 Our mission:
Enhancing the capacity of regional and local authorities to develop and implement better policies based on innovation in the areas of smart specializations.

🏛️ Our core values:
✔ Sustainability – promoting environmentally responsible solutions
✔ Aesthetics – designing spaces that enhance quality of life
✔ Inclusion – building accessible and open communities

💡 How do we achieve this? PICOBELLO is a collaboration between seven partners from six European countries, working together to exchange knowledge, organize workshops, study visits, and seminars. Through this process, we identify best practices and develop innovative pilot actions to implement the values of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) in local communities.

🌱 Co-design, innovation, and green transition are key elements of PICOBELLO, driving positive change and improving the quality of life in European cities.

This time, People of PICOBELLO takes us to Silesia – the region leading our European partnership. 🇵🇱

Meet Paulina Czernek, Communication Officer in the PICOBELLO project at the Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodeship, Poland.

We asked Paulina:

💬 What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?

“What inspires me most about PICOBELLO is seeing how the New European Bauhaus values can become real actions that improve people's everyday lives. I find it especially valuable that we can learn from different regions, exchange experiences and then think about how these ideas could work in our own regional context. For me, PICOBELLO shows that sustainability, inclusion and beauty are not just abstract concepts – they can become a practical part of how we design policies and shape better places to live.”

For Paulina, PICOBELLO is about connecting the bigger European vision with what happens locally. Inspiration may come from another region, another city or even a single conversation – but its real value appears when it helps us rethink what we can do in our own communities.

And after more than two years of exchanging experiences across Europe, there is certainly no shortage of inspiration! 💙

💡 How can New European Bauhaus values become part of everyday life - not just remain policy principles?

This was the focus of our latest regional PICOBELLO workshop in Silesia, Poland 🇵🇱

The session explored education and awareness-building around the New European Bauhaus, with particular attention to its three core values: beauty, sustainability and inclusion.

🧩Participants worked in two groups using a modified set of PANO tools, inspired by the workshop led by Sensipode during our previous PICOBELLO interregional meeting in Nantes.

Together, they looked at questions such as:
👉 Where can people encounter NEB values in their everyday lives?
👉 What can genuinely attract their attention?
👉 Who can become an audience, partner or ambassador?
👉 How can we design experiences that engage people rather than simply inform them?

The workshop brought together representatives of public administration, cultural institutions and NGOs, including the Silesian Library and the Silesian Museum.

🤝 Different perspectives, shared challenges and practical co-creation — this is exactly how PICOBELLO supports regions in turning NEB values into concrete local and regional action.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed their ideas and experience! 💙

What happens when ideas from across Europe meet local experience? 🌍

Today in our People of PICOBELLO series, we introduce Poppy Oikonomou, Project Manager at the ΚΕΠΑ - Κέντρο Επιχειρηματικής & Πολιτιστικής Ανάπτυξης Business and Cultural Development Centre (KEPA) in Greece.

We asked Poppy:

💬 What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?

“What inspires me most about PICOBELLO is the opportunity to learn from the experiences of cities and regions across Europe that are experimenting with new ways of involving citizens in shaping their living environments. Through the exchange of practices, tools and perspectives - particularly around participatory design and the New European Bauhaus - I have gained valuable insights into how local initiatives can become more inclusive, collaborative and impactful. It has been especially inspiring to see how these approaches can be adapted and applied within the local context of Thessaloniki.”

And this is exactly what interregional cooperation is about: learning from each other, exchanging ideas and finding ways to make them work locally. What works in one European region may inspire something new in another – while always responding to the needs and character of the local community.

Thank you, Poppy, for sharing your perspective and for bringing the PICOBELLO experience back to Thessaloniki! 💙

👥 People of PICOBELLO | #07

Positive change becomes much more achievable when ideas are turned into practical solutions. And when regions learn from one another, those solutions can be inspired by experiences from across Europe.

Meet Marika Ikäläinen, Project Manager at the Regional Council of Lapland, Finland.

What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?

“What inspires me most about PICOBELLO is its practical approach to creating positive change. I like how it connects regions across Europe to share knowledge, learn from each other, and develop solutions that make communities more sustainable, inclusive, and enjoyable places to live.”

Marika's perspective highlights both the practical and collaborative spirit of PICOBELLO. By bringing different European regions together, the project creates opportunities to learn from one another and turn shared knowledge into ideas that can make a real difference in our communities.

Thank you, Marika, for sharing your inspiration with us!

Different regions may have different contexts, but many of the challenges they face are surprisingly similar. And sometimes, looking at how others approach them is exactly what we need to see our own possibilities differently.

Meet Eugènia Martí Torroella, Innovation Director at the Barcelona Creativity & Design Foundation, Spain.

What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?

“What inspires me most about PICOBELLO is discovering that, although every region is unique, many of our challenges are shared. By exchanging experiences, we don't copy solutions—we broaden our perspective, challenge our own assumptions and discover new ways to place creativity at the heart of better public policies and stronger communities.”

Eugènia's perspective captures what interregional learning is really about: not simply transferring solutions from one place to another, but using different experiences to inspire new thinking. In PICOBELLO, these exchanges help each region explore approaches that make sense in its own local context.

Thank you, Jenny, for sharing your inspiration with us!

👥 People of PICOBELLO | #05

Great projects are not only about ideas and solutions – they are also about the people we meet along the way. Sharing knowledge, learning from different regions and building relationships are all part of the PICOBELLO experience.

Meet Sophie Eberhardt, Head of City Design Lab at L'École de design Nantes Atlantique, France.

What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?

“The best practices in Partners Regions, the partners expertise and their kind and caring energy.”

Sophie’s words highlight something that is easy to overlook: interregional cooperation is as much about people as it is about exchanging knowledge. The openness and energy within the partnership create an environment where experiences can be shared, new ideas can emerge and regions can learn from one another.

Thank you, Sophie, for sharing your inspiration with us!

👥 People of PICOBELLO | #04

Innovation creates the greatest impact when it responds to people's real needs. In PICOBELLO, collaboration with local communities helps turn ideas into meaningful change.

Meet María José Mariño, Director of the Talent and Knowledge Transfer Area at the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN), Spain.

What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?

"What inspires me most is seeing how innovation can improve people's everyday lives when it is developed together with local communities. PICOBELLO is helping us explore new ways to bring the values of the New European Bauhaus into regional innovation policies through collaboration, creativity and citizen participation."

María's perspective reminds us that innovation is most valuable when it is created with people, not only for them. By bringing together creativity, citizen participation and collaboration, PICOBELLO is helping shape regions that are more sustainable, inclusive and better connected to the needs of their communities.

Thank you, María, for sharing your inspiration with us!

👥 People of PICOBELLO | #03

Strong partnerships are built on people who believe that collaboration can make a real difference.

Meet Barbara Szafir, Deputy Director of the Regional Development and Transition Department at the Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodeship, Poland.

What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?

"What inspires me most about PICOBELLO is seeing how collaboration can turn shared European values into meaningful regional action. I believe that the best solutions for regions are created when public institutions work together with people, listen to their needs and learn from one another. Through PICOBELLO, we are not only exchanging experiences with our European partners, but also exploring new ways to make regional development more sustainable, inclusive and people-centred."

For Barbara, PICOBELLO shows that the best ideas emerge when people work together. By connecting regions, sharing experiences and listening to local communities, we can create policies that truly improve the places where we live.

Thank you, Barbara, for sharing your inspiration with us!

👥 People of PICOBELLO | #02

Every region has its own ideas, experiences and challenges. One of the greatest strengths of PICOBELLO is bringing these different perspectives together and turning them into inspiration for local action.

Today, we'd like you to meet Angeliki Barakli, Head of European Programmes Department at the ΚΕΠΑ - Κέντρο Επιχειρηματικής & Πολιτιστικής Ανάπτυξης, Greece.

When asked "What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?", Angeliki shared:

"What inspires me most about PICOBELLO is the opportunity to connect local ideas with European experiences and see how small actions can create meaningful change in communities. The project reminds us that citizens often have the best understanding of what their neighborhoods need."

Angeliki's reflection reminds us that meaningful change often starts with local initiatives. By connecting regional knowledge with European cooperation, PICOBELLO helps communities learn from one another while keeping citizens at the heart of the process.

Thank you, Angeliki, for sharing your perspective!

👥 People of PICOBELLO | #01

Behind every successful project are people whose ideas, passion and commitment make a real difference. Today, we're launching a new series – People of PICOBELLO – to introduce the people behind our project and share what inspires them on this European journey.

Meet Krišjānis Pundurs, Project Expert at Vidzemes plānošanas reģions (Latvia).

When asked "What inspires you most about PICOBELLO?", Krišjānis shared:

"The most inspiring part of this project for me is to see the differences between the regions of Europe – that it is possible to do things in other ways than you are used to. That opens your mind a bit more, but also makes you spot some things in your home area that you hadn't spotted before."

At the heart of PICOBELLO is the belief that every region has something valuable to share. By learning from one another, we gain fresh perspectives that help us create more sustainable, inclusive and beautiful places across Europe.

Thank you, Krišjānis, for sharing your inspiration with us!
