My Alternative Vision for Warsaw: Marszałkowska Street with Pre-War Charm (Without the Cancer of Central Blocks)
Imagine! Following the war devastation, the city blocks along Marszałkowska Street, which are currently occupied by modernist junk, would have been rebuilt in the spirit of pre-war architecture.
Instead of what we have now, we would see: Elegant Tenement Houses (Kamienice): Tall, multi-story buildings, often with richly decorated façades, balconies, and bay windows, typical of the wealthier districts of the 1920s and 30s. Representative Public Buildings: Faithfully restored palaces, department stores, and office buildings in the Neo-Baroque, Secession (Art Nouveau), or early modernist styles.
Narrower and More Winding Streets: The preservation of the pre-war network of streets and courtyards, which was denser and less "loosened up" than the post-war layout.
The Effect: The center of Warsaw, instead of its current Soviet-Socialist Realist character, would exude historical continuity and European elegance, resembling the central districts of Paris or Vienna.
However. Even if the decision were made for a faithful reconstruction of the pre-war Marszałkowska, the ownership problem generated by the Bierut Decree would remain the same. The new buildings would still have to stand on forcibly seized land, which would not change the fundamental lawlessness of the Bierut Decree, even if the city looked completely different.
