🐟Plan de Acción RNCLP 2025–2030 : se completó el primer borrador del Plan tras recibir aportes de la comunidad y diversos sectores de interés; se presentó en audiencia municipal (30 de abril) y en reunión comunitaria (31 de julio) donde se validaron las siguientes prioridades locales: Programa de Inspección y Mantenimiento de Boyas , el Programa Guardianes de la RNCLP (orientación a visitantes), la Certificación de Guías de Arrecife de la RNCLP, y Sostenibilidad financiera (recaudación de fondos)

🐟26° aniversario de la RNCLP (junio 2025) — “ Unidos por Nuestro Futuro Culebrense ”: se llevó a cabo una actividad comunitaria educativa en la Villa Pesquera junto a la Asociación Pesquera de Culebra, CORALations, Mujeres de Islas, Fundación de Culebra, Sociedad Ambiente Marino, Servicio Pesca y Vida Silvestre, entre otras organizaciones y miembros de la comunidad, que se unieron por la conservación ambiental y desarrollo sostenible de la isla municipio y conmemorar el aniversario de nuestra reserva natural. En el evento se recolectaron 74 firmas de apoyo y, en total, luego se entregaron 149 firmas a la Legislatura Municipal solicitando la asignación de un % del Fondo Ambiental de Culebra para facilitar la implementación del Plan de Acción 2025–2030.

🐟Acciones en el mar y la costa : se ofrecieron excursiones guiadas de snorkeling gratuitas para la comunidad gracias al apoyo de los operadores turísticos locales autorizados Snorkeling in Culebra y CSI Snorkel with Locals; también se organizaron limpiezas de playa en Tamarindo y Melones; y se coordinaron buceadas para remover peces león (especie invasora) en colaboración con Culebra Divers y la Sociedad Ambiente Marino.

🐟Sostenibilidad financiera : la Asociación Pesquera de Culebra se comprometió en facilitar la recaudación de fondos y donativos para la reserva natural; se sometieron 3 propuestas a fundaciones privadas para facilitar la implementación de prioridades locales identificadas (Inspección y Mantenimiento de Boyas de la RNCLP y Orientación de Visitantes de la RNCLP).

🐟 Política pública & manejo costero : se sometieron comentarios técnicos en procesos de política pública de uso de terreno y manejo de la zona costera del archipiélago (RC 2023, PMZCPR).

🐟DRNA - Boyas de la RNCLP : se instalaron boyas de amarre en áreas estratégicas de la reserva y gestionaron los permisos para instalar nuevas boyas de demarcación, avances claves para reducir anclaje y pesca ilegal en el Canal.
Próximos pasos : Seguiremos facilitando alianzas por la conservación de la biodiversidad y ecosistemas del Canal Luis Peña, así como para que las oportunidades socioeconómicas del Canal fluyan hacia la comunidad.

📣 Community Update - 2025 Achievements Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve (RNCLP) We close out 2025 with great achievements and progress for the protection and collaborative management of the Luis Peña Channel. Thank you for your support and participation! 🌊
🐟 RNCLP Action Plan 2025–2030: The first draft of the Plan was completed after receiving input from the community and various stakeholders; it was presented at a municipal hearing (April 30) and at a community meeting (July 31) where the following local priorities were validated: Buoy Inspection and Maintenance Program, the RNCLP Guardians Program (visitor guidance), RNCLP Reef Guide Certification, and Financial Sustainability (fundraising).
🐟 26th Anniversary of the RNCLP (June 2025) — “United for Our Culebra Future”: an educational community activity was held at the Fishing Village together with the Culebra Fishing Association, CORALations, Mujeres de Islas, Culebra Foundation, Sociedad Ambiente Marino, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, among other organizations and community members, who united for the environmental conservation and sustainable development of the island municipality and to commemorate the anniversary of our natural reserve. At the event, 74 signatures of support were collected, and in total, 149 signatures were later delivered to the Municipal Legislature requesting the allocation of a percentage of the Culebra Environmental Fund to facilitate the implementation of the 2025–2030 Action Plan.
🐟 Actions at sea and on the coast: free guided snorkeling excursions were offered to the community thanks to the support of authorized local tour operators Snorkeling in Culebra and CSI Snorkel with Locals; beach cleanups were also organized in Tamarindo and Melones; and dives were coordinated to remove lionfish (an invasive species) in collaboration with Culebra Divers and Sociedad Ambiente Marino. 🐟 Financial Sustainability: The Culebra Fishing Association committed to facilitating fundraising and donations for the nature reserve; three proposals were submitted to private foundations to facilitate the implementation of identified local priorities (Inspection and Maintenance of the RNCLP Buoys and Visitor Orientation for the RNCLP).
🐟 Public Policy & Coastal Management: Technical comments were submitted on public policy processes for land use and coastal zone management of the archipelago (RC 2023, PMZCPR).
🐟 DRNA - RNCLP Buoys: Mooring buoys were installed in strategic areas of the reserve, and permits were obtained to install new demarcation buoys, key advancements in reducing illegal anchoring and fishing in the Channel.
Next Steps: We will continue to facilitate partnerships for the conservation of the biodiversity and ecosystems of the Luis Peña Channel, as well as to ensure that the Channel's socioeconomic opportunities benefit the community.

As part of Coral Reef Week, dive in and explore the marine ecosystems of the Channel through a guided interpretive tour! (Limited spaces)

No previous experience required.

It will be a unique experience: you will learn about the history of the nature reserve and observe the biodiversity that inhabits the Channel’s ecosystems. We will also reflect on ways we can contribute to its conservation.

🚨"Daño masivo al arrecife frente a Playa Honeymoon (noroeste del Cayo Luis Peña), dentro de la Reserva Natural Canal Luis Peña. Gran parte del arrecife ha quedado aplanado, probablemente debido al impacto prolongado de la cadena de un ancla de yate, en algún momento del último mes.
Todos los corales blandos y abanicos de coral han desaparecido. El arrecife está destruido. No hemos visto una destrucción como esta desde Irma y María. Por favor, por favor, anclen con responsabilidad."

"Massive damage to reef off of Honeymoon Beach (Luis Peña Island) in the Reserva Natural Canal Luis Peña. A large portion of the reef has been flattened, probably from extended raking by a large yacht anchor chain, sometime in the last month. All the soft corals and fans are down. The reef is destroyed.
