U.S. Army Spc. Fabian Velez, representing the Alpha Company, 1/65th Infantry Regiment, 92nd Military Police Brigade, Puerto Rico Army National Guard, and U.S. Army Sgt. Pedro Miranda, representing the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 292nd Combat Sustainment Battalion, 191st Regional Support Group, Puerto Rico Army National Guard are the Enlisted and Noncommissioned officer winners of the Best Warrior Competition, at Camp Santiago, Puerto Rico, Feb. 22, 2026.
Velez and Miranda will move onto the regional phase of the Best Warrior Competitions, in Camp Butner Training Center, North Carolina. 16 Soldiers from five major commands of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard competed in the Best Warrior Competition at Camp Santiago, Puerto Rico, Feb. 22, 2026. On the fourth day, Soldiers ruck-marched 12 miles with a weighted rucksack and attended a promotion board to demonstrate knowledge and confidence. 16 Soldiers from five major commands of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard competed in the Best Warrior Competition at Camp Santiago, Puerto Rico, Feb. 21, 2026. On the third day, Soldiers performed an Army Fitness Test, swam through a water survival event, navigated an obstacle course, demonstrated proficiency in medical evacuation procedures and were interviewed to test their communication skills.
During the events, General Steven S. Nordhaus, Chief of the National Guard Bureau, and Senior Enlisted Advisor John Raines, the senior enlisted advisor to the chief of the National Guard Bureau, spoke with competitors and leadership of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard. The competition will feature a multitude of events that test the Soldier’s mental, physical, and tactical proficiency, while developing their resiliency and exemplifying the warrior ethos.
