We’re continuing to share the research presented by the TubaProf team at the European Elasmobranch Association 2026 (EEA2026)! Today, we’re highlighting the studies presented by Leonor Mendonça and Laurence Fauconnet.
🦈 Leonor studied the vulnerability of two deep-water shark species to bottom longline fishing in the Azores, including local fishermen’s knowledge in the assessment. The significant changes in the results after adding this knowledge highlight the importance of working with the fishing sector to improve scientific assessments, especially when data are limited.
💡 Laurence presented experiments to test whether LED lights of different colours can help reduce the bycatch of deep-water elasmobranchs. The results show that their responses vary depending on the colour of the light and the species, opening up new possibilities for developing measures to reduce bycatch.
Congratulations to all four team members on your research and participation in the conference! 👏
