Campaigns can’t be the testing ground for AI. Candidates need a partner who’s already done the homework.

So yesterday we were at the IQ Digital Summit, hearing Mo Gawdat on preparing for intelligence that outpaces us and Nancy Rademaker on AI agents becoming the audience. Our notes cover what it means for campaigns and for voters everywhere.

We published a guide to campaign AI rules in September and… it was behind within days:

Kenya opened a consultation on treating political affiliation as sensitive data. India's Supreme Court stayed the Gujarat proceedings, though the labelling and takedown duties stand.

A media plan scoped in March and shipped in September crosses most of a year of that. No approval chain runs at that speed.

So we stopped trying to know the rules:

1. Build to the strictest rule in your footprint
2. Separate what's in force from what's still being argued
3. Design disclosure in at the brief
4. Date your legal position, re-check in weeks

A bumblebee just got more votes than Reform UK has members.

Read this if your name is on a ballot, or your money is.

360,399 people picked the buff-tailed bumblebee for the next Bank of England notes. Reform UK reported around 268,000 members last December. Labour had 264,754 in 2025.

A free click isn't a paid membership, granted. But a year earlier the same bank asked which of six themes should go on the notes and got 44,000 answers. Hand people a shortlist of 18 animals and nearly half a million turn up.

Same bank, each consultation open for a month. The only thing that changed was how easy the question was to answer.

That's the lesson for any campaign. Voters don't stay home because the stakes are high. Scottish independence pulled 84.6% in 2014. They stay home when the ask is confusing: Police and Crime Commissioner elections averaged 23.2% in 2024. If your turnout plan adds urgency instead of removing complexity, the money's going on the wrong thing.

And the twist. The red fox took 244,651 selections. The puffin took 183,137. The fox came second in mammals, the hedgehog took that slot, so the fourth place went to the most popular marine animal instead. More selections, no note.

The wording decides the answer. The rule decides the winner.

Two elections, same Sunday. They couldn't have looked more different.

🇧🇷 Brazil counted millions of votes and is heading to a presidential runoff on 25 October.

🇧🇦 Bosnia used fingerprint ID and ballot scanners in a general election for the first time.

Very different systems, but the lesson is the same.

Technology can confirm who voted and count every ballot. It still can't tell you why someone changed their mind.

She became mayor of Marrakesh at 33. Now she's prime minister.

Fatima Ezzahra EI Mansouri inherits one number: a million new jobs in five years. That's the promise her party won on, in a country where the median age is around 30 and youth employment has been the dominant political story for years.

No government in the region has delivered at that pace. Hers will be measured on whether it comes close.

Bosnia says this will be its fairest election yet. Worth watching how.

From 4 October, every polling station has a fingerprint reader and a ballot scanner, for the first time at a general election there. It answers fraud that courts had already documented: ballots cast for the dead, votes cast in someone else's name, blank ballots filled in after closing.

The commission has been open that this covers election day, not the months before it. Transparency International has flagged almost 68 million marks in one-off payments since the election was called.

Both halves are useful to anyone voting soon. The polling-station fix can be bought and audited. The upstream half, clear rules on public money during a campaign, is slower and costs almost nothing.

Bosnia is doing the difficult part in the open. That's the part worth copying.

£2.4 million on content creators in UK. Zero published numbers on what it bought.

We only know that because opposition MPs filed written questions. Education spent £718,971. HMRC £591,200, all of this before agency fees.

Asked to justify it - the departments said these channels reach people traditional advertising misses. While this is true, it’s also not an answer. There's no cost per acquisition anywhere in it, no conversion rate, no control group. They can tell you what they bought, but nobody can show what it did.

That gap is why creator budgets get cut first.

We're watching Morocco because over half the country is under 35, and last year showed what happens when that generation mobilises.

Last autumn a leaderless collective called Gen Z 212 which organized on Discord and put young Moroccans on the street in 14 cities. And yet.. The government held.

It bet that an election a year out would move the anger indoors, on its own terms, instead of meeting it again in the street.

On the 23rd we see how that bet went.
