Angelique’s extended family completely accepted Sandrine in spite of his cleft condition. Unfortunately, her husband Vincent could not bring himself to love his son and forced them to leave the home. Angelique had no choice, as a new mother, but to return to her parent’s house and live with them. With time, Vincent learned more about cleft conditions and decided to welcome his wife and son back into their home. In April of 2018, Angelique brought her son to Rwinkwavu Hospital to be screened during our surgical training rotation program when he was just 3 months old, but he was too young. The second time they came in October of 2018, he was malnourished and it wasn’t safe for the doctors to administer anesthesia. This time, their third attempt, Angelique was thrilled when our doctors told her that her son was healthy enough to undergo the surgery he needed.

Angelique and her 17-month-old son traveled by bus for four hours and walked the last hour to reach us. Sandrine was scheduled to receive surgery to repair his bilateral cleft lip and his mom Angelique could not have been happier! “He’s going to grow up well. His health is going to be good. All I can say is thank you. I can’t say any more than thank you.”
