Höstlov is week 44 every year and it still catches a lot of parents off guard. Schools close for the full week, förskola stays open, and suddenly you need a plan.
Start with your municipality's website and your local library. There's usually more going on than you'd think, and most of it is free.

What are you doing with your kids this höstlov?

Autumn clothes and winter clothes in Sweden are genuinely different things. Once snow and proper cold arrive, a rain jacket stops being enough.
But that doesn't mean buying everything new. Second-hand is completely normal here, especially for things children may only use for one season.
Before shopping, check what your child's förskola actually needs. And start looking in October, not December.
What would you add to this list?

I didn't really understand höstmys when I first moved here.
When autumn got darker, I wanted to keep doing everything exactly as I had before.
Eventually I realised that people here weren't trying to ignore the season. They were adapting to it.
A warm drink, candles, dinner at home, a slower evening.
Do you have a version of that where you come from?

October 4 is Kanelbullens dag, Sweden's cinnamon bun day. Some Swedish traditions take a little time to get used to. This one wasn't particularly difficult.

Do you usually have your fika at home or go out for it?

One of the small things nobody really explains when you move to Sweden with children: what are they actually supposed to wear?

I learned mostly by getting it wrong. The biggest change was understanding that it's less about one warm outfit and more about layers, weather protection and having spare clothes at förskola.

And asking another parent what they actually use can save a lot of guessing.

What did you have to figure out the hard way?

I used to think buying second-hand meant settling for less. Now I think it often means buying smarter.

Children grow too fast. The clothes don't wear out, they simply move on to another child. And honestly... I love that idea.

What's something you never imagined buying second-hand until you moved here?

The car question comes up constantly for families moving to Stockholm.
Inside the city, between parking costs and congestion taxes, it often doesn't make financial sense.
Outside, it's a different calculation. Do you have a car here? Would you make the same choice again?

The SFI vs paid course question is one of the most common things we hear from newcomers. Both have a place. The key is knowing which one fits where you are right now in terms of time, budget, and goals.

Did you do SFI? A paid course? Both? What worked for you?

Buying new clothes for kids in Sweden is one of those things that feels normal until you realise how fast they outgrow everything. Second-hand here is
genuinely good quality and much cheaper. The only things worth buying new? Shoes and helmets.

Do you buy new or second-hand mostly?

When my first baby was born, I spent almost 9,000 kr on a brand-new stroller. At the time, it felt like the obvious choice. Looking back, I just didn't know any different.

By my second baby, almost everything had changed. We swapped clothes with friends, discovered the goldmine that is Sweden's second-hand market, and realised how normal that is here. Not as a compromise. Just as a different way of thinking.

Living in Sweden changed the way I buy things. Honestly, I waste a lot less money now than I did when we first arrived. What's one thing you bought new at first, but would happily buy second-hand today?
