Every final Thursday of each month, everyone in the office gathers for our health, safety and environment (HSE) meeting.

This is where we go through processes and steps that we can all pick up to improve workplace safety, and to discuss anything that has happened in the month prior with regards to HSE matters.

A safe workplace is a healthy workplace, and we will always strive for that as much as possible!

One of our most recent ongoing jobs has been to perform maintenance, paintwork and repairs to a building at 73 Sultan Gate. This particular project also plays to one of our strengths, which is conservation work.

Being a restored historic building dating back to the 19th century, there is significant cultural value to this building, and we are honoured to be appointed to perform the required works on this structure.

Given its heritage, great care has to be exercised in all our works there. Even more so since we have to set up scaffolding structures to perform work on the upper floors, so great care has to be exercised in order to prevent unnecessary damage to the building.

While this may seem like an afterthought, an important part of furniture varnishing is mixing the right colours for the varnish, so that the appearance of the finished product doesn't look "off" or incorrect once all the work is done.

All previous work could be for naught if the colour used for finishing isn't right, and we don't want that happening!

Yesterday was also the final training session for our tradesmen who undertook this furniture varnishing upgrade course, with the final assessment to come later this week. Once all that is done, they'll be able to undertake jobs where they can use their new skills, so stay tuned for updates!

On top of having the anti-drug talks and CPR/AED tutorials, we also had the pleasure of having lunch catered through the generosity of Mr Abu Sufyan, who as part of his effort to give back to the migrant work community, sponsored lunch for our tradesmen with generous servings of fried chicken and sambal goreng over fluffy rice.

From all of us here at Aegis Building & Engineering, thank you, Mr Sufyan, for your kindness, generosity, support and love that you show to migrant workers here in Singapore.

Last Saturday was quite the flurry of activity here at Aegis!

Every so often, talks will be organised for our tradesmen by various organisations to share about various social topics, and this time it was officers from CNB Drug Free SG and volunteers from Pioneer C2E who came down to speak about the dangers of drugs and the importance of knowing how to administer CPR and operate a portable defibrillator (AED).

These are both very important matters that we want our tradesmen to know more about, as it both preserves their own lives and gives them the ability to save the lives of others if the situation calls for it!

Are you wondering why the front of our company vehicle is adorned with a garland and banana leaf stalks? That's because our tradesmen are commemorating Ayudha Pooja!

Also known as the "worship of tools", this day is observed to honour, show gratitude for, and seem blessings through the instruments, machinery and objects that make livelihoods and daily work possible.

Through these prayers, our men asked for blessings for our company vehicles, workspaces, and smooth work processes at our upcoming projects, together with safety for everyone in Aegis!

We're back with another round of Sunday training, and our tradesmen are now midway through refining their furniture varnishing skills!

As they progress to using spray guns to apply various coatings on wood for different finishes, it is important to have the required PPE for the situation, some as eye protection, N95 masks and respirators, as these chemicals are harmful when inhaled.

Safety at the workplace is always paramount, and that is always at the top of our list no matter what we do!

Every morning, the same message goes out to our company group chats, "Good morning team! Safety is paramount, and let's all do quality work!"

Safety is something that we've continually emphasised on, through various safety practices, measures and protective gear. After all, an unsafe workplace is a dangerous workplace, and an unsafe workplace will inevitably result in more injuries.

We are honoured to have been presented with this award for our commitment to workplace health and safety, and we'll continue striving to meet and exceed the standards set, and to bring them to a higher standard.

No doubt, the heart of Aegis Building & Engineering are our tradesmen who are always hard at work on their respective job sites.

But it mustn't be forgotten, the staff in our office who work in tandem with them, preparing spreadsheets, material orders, coordinating schedules and client discussions.

All that to ensure our tradesmen can focus on what they need to do, without distractions. After all, it's always a team effort here.

While the Singapore Grand Prix is already over and the race cars are moving off elsewhere, one thing is for certain, and that being our fleet is staying right here, ready to assist our tradesmen for their next assignment!

And as always, being environmentally friendly is something we believe in very strongly here, and we stand by our ethos of "Aegis is riding green!"
