On this day, SQ117 was hijacked by four Pakistani terrorists, who demanded the release of six key Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) activists from jail.

The successful resolution of the hijack was a multi-agency effort. ISD played a critical role in collecting tactical intelligence on the hijackers, which informed the government’s decision to storm the plane after the hijackers issued an ultimatum and threatened to kill the hostages. An ISD officer, who was part of the negotiation team, spoke to the hijackers in Urdu, causing them to rush to the cockpit. This diversion allowed the Singapore Armed Forces’ Special Operations Force to storm the plane.

Within minutes, the hijackers were neutralised. All crew and passengers were rescued.

The SQ117 hijack is a solemn reminder that Singapore may be indirectly but significantly impacted by foreign conflicts.

Saw the news on multi-agency effort Ops Cyber Guardian against UNC3886?

Together with Cyber Security Agency of Singapore - CSA, Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies (CSIT), Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore, The Digital and Intelligence Service and GovTech (Government Technology Agency of Singapore), it is just another day for ISD officers.

We work behind the scenes, gathering intelligence across physical and cyber domains to detect Advanced Persistent Threats that adversely affect Singapore's internal security. To this end, ISD officers apply deep tech capabilities with intelligence tradecraft to sense-make and investigate cyber and online threats.

Little publicity is done about ISD's work on this front. Besides Ops Cyber Guardian, we also worked with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) to arrest six individuals for suspected involvement in illegal cyber activities here.

If you are interested in an intelligence career in deep tech that keeps Singapore safe and sovereign, find out more about ISD's tech job openings at Careers@Gov.

24 years ago today, Singapore came dangerously close to a tragedy.

Unseen threats were stirring in our midst. The Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist network had plotted to conduct attacks across Singapore, including at Yishun MRT, Changi Airport and Sembawang Naval Base. Their objectives were, amongst others, to target American individuals and interests as part of their broader affiliation with the Al-Qaeda’s “global Jihad” ideology, and debilitate Singapore’s infrastructure and economy.

Had the JI succeeded, the peace and stability we often take for granted in Singapore would have been shattered.

Let’s never forget how close we came to such tragedy, and stay vigilant to protect our home.

By understanding terrorism threats to Singapore and learning to spot signs of radicalisation, you can stay aware, protect your friends, family and community.
