Mui Hoong’s article struck a chord with me. In Bukit Batok, all our 12 Residents Network regularly organise litter-picking activities to instill in our neighbourhood the value of being stewards of our community. As she mentioned, unfortunately in Singapore, many amongst us feel that cleaning up is the responsibility of our migrant workers. Many parts of our environment are “cleaned”, as opposed to being “clean”. We must change this mindset. Paraphrasing (then) 13 year old Etienne Neo who was quoted in the article, we should not see cleanliness as a service provided by others, rather we should see it as a shared responsibility. How profound!!!
