A view of a magnificent river from the bridge near Sengkang Sports Complex. This picture does indeed encapsulate the youthfulness of the town, seeing that construction is still undergoing on new apartment blocks in the distance and yet its vibrancy and beauty, with the myriad wildlife around the river and its beauty. Indeed, it is a sight to behold on a Friday morning, TGIF!

With most of Sengkang West still undergoing construction as new BTOs slowly rise into the skyline, this has led to a number of obstacles on pedestrain pavements. As such, we must remark that ingenuity was shown by the workers who planned out alternative routes and in their usuage of ramps to ensure that not only are pedestrians able to travel a straight path, but cyclists as well. The ramp we saw here, together with the guiding arrows, was entirely home-made and indeed made our movement easier!

One thing about Sengkang is that you can literally see this sign everywhere! For most of the basketball courts here, the lights are configured to switch off once it hits 10pm, in a curfew-like quality. There are sound reasons for the implementation of this measure though, for chiefly, it discourages deliquent youths and gangs from using the area for their activities. Secondly, since people can't play late at night, local residents thus do not have to worry about noise and could grab a peaceful night's sleep!

Formerly Seletar Air Base before it moved further inwards, Seletar Aerospace Park is full of structures from a by-gone era. An example would be this old blue house, which looked like it came out of the pages of a colonial era book. The house is located quite far in from the entrance, and is adjacent to Seletar Camp. Far afar, it felt spooky and for a moment left us wondering, Singapore is famous for having a Red House and a Green House, would this be the equivalent to a Blue House, given the history and stories of the area?

Recently, as the end-of-the-year monsoon season approaches in Singapore, there has been a shift in weather patterns. If you'd noticed, it has been getting brighter earlier and earlier and turning dark earlier and earlier too (its almost completely dark at 7pm nowadays). Heres an aerial shot taken of the skies at 6.20am, as first light breaks through the sky.The crack of dawn is always a beautiful thing!

Rivervale Plaza's iconic supermarket, Fairprice, is open 24 hours. This was an improvement from the days past when the supermarket would close around 10-11pm. However, after a renovation and a change in operating plans in recent years, the supermarket was designated a 24 hour one as the management recognised that people were sleeping later and later. Thus, for friends that live in neighbouring Blk 123 just across the road, it was a relief. Instead of having to turn to 7-11 for overpriced nightsnacks and cup noodles, there is now a cheaper alternative to purchase their food!

Upgrading works are currently undergoing in the housing estste of Blk 260-263 along Sengkang East Way. Residents are reminded to watch out for falling debris and keep to the shelters. Extended shelters have been set up and warning signs have been put up. In the midst of these ongoing activities, there were at times interesting sights observed. For example, a giant crane was brought into the neighbourhood to help with the works and it was captivating to watch the teamwork displayed by construction workers in directing the huge vehicle within the estate to prevent the arm from swinging against the buildings!

As we made our rounds in Sengkang, we noticed a large undertaking over at North Spring Primary School. Over the past few years, much of the area has been revamped, with new facilities such as a sheltered walkway, a refurbished library, as well as upgrades to its sports facilities. In this latest project, the school is building an indoor sports hall in its bid to nurture neighbourhood sporting talent. It is extremely encouraging to see the school going the extra mile to nurture other thrusts outside of academia!

Early in the morning, one can observe these lights in one of the HDB blocks in Sengkang. Such is the lingering traces of Deepavali, which took place yesterday. Also known as the festival of lights, Deepavali is celebrated in autumn yearly as a milestone event in the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance. The festival saw plenty of turnout yesterday night among the playgrounds and amphitheatres of Sengkang neighbourhoods. Adults and children played with sparklers and cheered readily, with a free flow of food specially prepared for the festival going around.

To residents living in Blks 116A to 117C, we would like to bring to your attention that on 23 October, the town council will be carrying out chemical treatment of the blocks' refuse chutes and manholes. In the form of the fine chemical spray, the treatment is expected to leave fine droplets of poisonous substances on the surfaces in order to kill pests and insects. Hence, please understand if some loud commotion causes disruption to your daily lives on that day and that you keep yoing children away from the chutes and manholes least they touch the surface and put their hands in their mouth.

Its early in the morning, but the hours does not deter this group of people, who often meets up as early as 6am for their regular exercise and taiji session over at the Sengkang Sculpture Park. For residents on the lookout for exercise groups, there are various taiji classes conducted throughout Sengkang, normally in the park or near shopping malls such as the field outside Rivervale Plaza, where large groups of practitioners are often seen going for breakfast after their usual workout. These classes are usually very popular especially among senior citizens. In fact, for today's session, about 40-50 people were in attendance!
