Participants at the Singapore Precision Engineering and Technology Association (SPETA) learning journey to HH Stainless Pte Ltd got a firsthand look at how improvements and automation can help make work safer on the ground.
Supported by the WSH Council and the Singapore Ministry of Manpower, the session brought industry stakeholders together to exchange insights on machinery safety, recent WSH learning points, and programmes such as Top Executive WSH Programme (TEWP), bizSAFE and Total WSH.
During the facility tour, participants explored how HH Stainless has integrated safety into its daily operations through:
- Automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) and robotic lifting solutions for heavy items
- Smart lifting systems with sensors to enhance lifting safety
- Redesigned lifting equipment to improve safe lifting practices
- A customised lifting platform that helps reduce work-at-height risks
💡Every safer process, practical innovation and design improvement reflects a conscious choice to better protect workers.

But as technology advances, should people still be carrying out some of the most dangerous work when safer alternatives exist?
In an interview with TechNode Global, Professor Mohan Rajesh Elara explores how robotics, automation and remote technologies can help reduce worker exposure to high-risk environments.
Rather than focusing only on how to better protect workers from hazards, Dr Mohan highlights the need to re-design hazardous work itself – allowing technology to take on higher-risks tasks, while workers remain central to operations and decision-making.

The technologies needed to reduce exposure to hazardous work already exist. What is required now is broader adoption, supported by applied research, industry testbeds, and regulatory frameworks that recognize and reward genuine risk reduction.

Stronger WSH outcomes depend on how leaders set direction, how HR supports people and well-being, how risk and governance teams build accountability, and how WSH and operations teams translate standards into action on the ground.
At The Singapore WSH Conference 2026, organisations will come together to explore how leadership, technology and care can support safer, healthier and more sustainable workplaces.
Bring your team to align on shared priorities, strengthen collaboration across functions, and turn WSH insights into practical action for your organisation.

The Singapore Ministry of Manpower has called on contractors in the construction industry to conduct a voluntary Safety Time-Out (STO) from 20 May to 3 June 2026. This follows two fatal construction accidents earlier this month. Read more in MOM’s post below.
We urge companies to maintain vigilance and ensure proper safety measures are in place at worksites, at all times. Employers and supervisors must ensure that proper risk assessments are conducted, safe work procedures are followed, and workers are adequately briefed on workplace hazards and control measures. Workers, too, should remain vigilant and speak up when they encounter unsafe situations.
Learn how your company can carry out an STO at https://www.tal.sg/wshc/resources/publications/checklists-and-articles/time-out-checklist.

In view of recent workplace fatalities, the Ministry of Manpower urges contractors in the construction industry to conduct a voluntary Safety Time-Out from 20 May to 3 June 2026 to review their workplace safety practices, reinforce safe work procedures, and remind workers of the importance of workplace safety vigilance.
In May 2026, there have been two fatal construction accidents.
• One case involved a banksman being struck by a falling concrete section during hacking process.
• The other case involved a site supervisor who was struck by pallets of bricks when the canopy structure which the pallets were placed on gave way.
Both accidents were clearly preventable.
These accidents underscore the importance of maintaining vigilance and ensuring that proper safety measures are in place at worksites. It is imperative that companies prioritise workplace safety and reinforce safe work procedures at their worksites.
Employers and supervisors must ensure that proper risk assessments are conducted, safe work procedures are adhered to, and workers are adequately briefed on workplace hazards and control measures. Workers should also remain vigilant and speak up if they encounter unsafe situations.
Workplace safety is a choice and a shared responsibility. When all stakeholders – employers, supervisors, and workers – make the decision to prioritise safety in every decision and action, we can keep workplaces safe for everyone.
