Did you know that the ancient festival of Qing Ming is marked today?
But what exactly is Qing Ming? It literally translates to “clear and bright” in Mandarin 🌞, and this day is also known as tomb sweeping day.
It is an ancient Chinese tradition of visiting the tombs of one’s ancestors to pay respects. Family members clean the tombs, burn joss sticks and joss paper, and leave food and drink offerings.
Qing Ming falls on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, which is 4, 5, or 6 April.
In Singapore, visits to cemeteries and columbaria take place in the weeks following this date. On weekends, traffic jams occur on the roads leading to these sites. 🚦🚗
Fun fact: This Straits Times photo from 1974 shows a traffic jam along Upper Thomson Road leading to Peck San Theng Cemetery – since exhumed for Bishan town. “Cheng Beng” is Hokkien for Qing Ming.
Qing Ming is just one of many festivals around the world dedicated to commemorating loved ones who have passed on. Want to find out more about other festivals across myriad cultures and civilisations? Visit Hell’s Museum today! 🔥
