Ambassador Ishikawa Hiroshi and Madam Ishikawa Yuko attended the Charity Tea Gathering “Enjoying the Furo”on 24 May, held at the Tea Room of The Japanese Association, Singapore シンガポール日本人会, organized by the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association
During the gathering, a hanging scroll with the inscription “葉々起清風”written by Sen Sōsh*tsu XV, who passed away last year at the age of 102, was displayed and appreciated by guests. The inscription is from the “Xutang Record”: when sending off a friend, the wind shakes the bamboo, and the rustling sound of its leaves sends a refreshing parting gift. This phrase signifies an exchange of pure hearts and resonates with the “共想” spirit of SJ60, the 60th anniversary of Singapore-Japan diplomatic relations.

🦇What makes bats capable of surviving for nearly 40 years?
At the 3rd Science Community Singapore (SCS), Professor Itahana Koji of Duke-NUS Medical School gave a fascinating lecture on cutting-edge bat research, unraveling how such small mammals can live longer than larger species, and its potential implications for healthy ageing in humans.
Professor Itahana explained that one possible key to bats’ exceptional longevity may lie in their remarkably high resistance to cancer cells, although the mechanism has not yet been fully proven. His efforts to uncover how these unique traits work — and how they might eventually contribute to extending the healthy human lifespan — captivated the audience and sparked a lively Q&A session.
SCS is a network of Japanese researchers, engineers, and research-related professionals in Singapore.
