In our second episode of the ‘My ATOM Diary’ series, Mock Hui Ling gives us a look at work as an Admin Secretary during her one-month attachment at the High Commission of the Republic of Singapore, India!

“HQ work requires assessment from a broader perspective to derive general policy guidelines that could be applied across Missions while Mission work requires officers to apply these broad guidelines locally, which holds a different set of challenges.

The ATOM gave intriguing insights to the fun and challenging aspects of working overseas as a diplomat. From adapting to the local operating environment to exploring an entirely new and unique culture, it has been a short yet enriching journey.”

Bonjour! Meet Carol, MFA’s hiking enthusiast currently posted to Geneva, Switzerland.

As Attaché (Admin and Consular), she helps with tasks like protocol and consular visits. The learning curve is steep, and it would be difficult to cope if not for her colleagues.

Hiking takes her mind off things and helps her focus on the tranquillity of the moment. At the end of each hike, Carol snaps pictures of the promised view and leaves with a sense of accomplishment. Her new hobby has taught her to enjoy her own company, and spending time outdoors exploring nature improves her mood immensely.

Swipe to read about her favourite hikes and the lessons she’s learned from being posted overseas.

The annual 'Read for Books' charity drive is back and in-person this time. As part of this initiative by the National Reading Movement, one book is donated for every 10 participants who reads for 15 minutes.

Some of the had thus gathered for a 'Read Together' session in MFA's reading room.

"Since 'Read for Books' was a charity drive, I had wanted to do my part, especially as all I had to do was take some time off my lunch time for a good cause." said Jazli Majid, Assistant Consular Executive (Emergency Planning Branch). "I hope more of such events can be organised and that officers can encourage one another to participate."

MFA officers are provided with many training opportunities to prepare them for a diplomatic career. One such programme is the month long Attachment to an Overseas Mission (ATOM), where young officers get a first-hand preview of work at our overseas embassies, high commissions, or consulates.

In the very first episode of our ’My ATOM Diary’ series, we take a peek into Parveen Kaur’s one month attachment to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Singapore to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland!

"I entered Switzerland on a remarkably scenic train ride from Austria.

My biggest takeaways from ATOM was obtaining practical experiences essential for my upcoming posting to Vienna, Austria, and recognising the dedication of the excellent admin and political teams in our Geneva Mission."
