Be a Force of Change. Be a Healthcare Scholar today! By 2030, close to one million or 1 in 5 Singapore residents will be above the age of 65.

With Singaporeโ€™s growing and ageing population, our healthcare needs are expected to rise significantly in the coming years. We will therefore need to expand public healthcare services and grow a core of healthcare professionals, so as to continue to provide quality and affordable care for all Singaporeans. As a healthcare scholar, you will play an important role in shaping the future of Singapore

Unsung Hands: An Operating Theatre Nurse's Fight for Precision, Patience, and Life 10/05/2025

Nursing isn't just a career for Russell Teoโ€”it's a calling shaped by his mother's stroke, a lesson about the fragility of life. That fragility fuels the 29-year-old's work as an operating theatre nurse at Singapore General Hospital.

Each surgery presents a new learning opportunity; every patient he helps save in the operating theatre reinforces his commitment, even if his work remains largely unseen.

SDF Feature: Our physiotherapy scholars Huisi Chow, Jasher Teh, Michelle Lee, Milton Yeong & Mohamed Taufiq attended the 14th Congress of The European Pain Federation (EFIC) held at Palais des congrรจs de Lyon in Lyon, France from 24-26 April 2025.

The conference shed light on the current literature and management of a wide array of medical conditions that included painful diabetic polyneuropathy, osteoarthritis, low back pain and migraine, as well as obesity management and behaviour change theories.

This experience broadened our scholarsโ€™ perspectives on the multifaceted nature of pain management and highlighted the importance of a holistic, interdisciplinary approach. It was an invaluable opportunity to learn from leading experts, engage in meaningful discussions, and bring back valuable insights to enhance their practice and contribute to the physiotherapy community in Singapore.

SDF feature: Our nursing scholars, Wei Li & Celestine Low, attended the 15th International Nursing Conference (INC) and the 28th East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars (EAFONS). The events were held at the COEX Convention and Exhibition Center, Seoul from 13-14 Feb 2025.

Wei Li, a Y4 nursing student at NUS Nursing, was co-awarded the Best Poster Presentation Award for his e-poster titled โ€œAssociation between Myostatin Concentration and the Cognitive Status among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Descriptive Correlational Studyโ€. In light of the growing local dementia population, his research sought to examine factors associated with poor cognition, to inform future preventive interventions, with myostatinโ€”a known biomarker of muscle massโ€”primarily of interest.

Celestine Low, also a Y4 nursing student at NUS Nursing, had her abstract accepted for oral presentation. The abstract was from a qualitative study titled "Nurses' Perspectives in the Implementation of Self-Administered Medication (SAM) in a Community Hospital." The findings in the study, highlight the complexities of SAM, including patient-related challenges (e.g., dexterity, literacy, and cognitive concerns), workflow integration, system inefficiencies, and the role of healthcare providers. By incorporating nurses' perspectives, the research offers actionable insights to improve SAM implementation, optimise nursing workflows, and guide future studies on patient-centered medication management.

Both of them ended the trip with a picturesque photo at Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul before heading back to Singapore. We are certain that the experience will further develop them into future nursing leaders!

โค๏ธ๐Ÿด Scholar engagement time: Last week, our scholarship officers (SOs) caught up with healthcare scholars across various disciplines. These sessions serve as a catch-up between the SOs and the scholars. Topics that were brought up included tips for junior scholars (from the more senior ones) and suggestions on ways to use Scholar Development Framework funds. Most importantly, the chats were personal and we could catch up on the things of life.

Hereโ€™s to supporting each other on this adventure! ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

On 14 March 2025, 30 in-service healthcare scholars undertook an insightful learning journey to NTUC Health @ Kampung Admiralty. The learning journey was jointly organised by MOHH, NTUC Health, and the Agency for Integrated Care - AIC Singapore! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅ

We explored from a policy perspective through a sharing by Ms Grace Lin from AIC. A ground-level perspective from Dr Lily Yeo and Ms Yurini Suryanto from NTUC Health also helped us understand how they have supported active ageing through their Active Ageing Centres (AACs) and innovative approaches.

This was followed by sharings from the various healthcare professionals from NTUC Health@Kampung Admiralty and 2 art activities with the senior volunteers. These activities brought the 'kampung spirit' to life as the scholars bonded with the seniors.

We ended the day with a fireside chat exploring the importance of strong partnerships, and innovative approaches by nudging ground-up initiatives and going beyond KPIs to take a longer view of outcomes.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated & to our scholars, we hope that the learning helped broaden your perspectives in the area of active ageing and the larger community care setting.

The tumour no one saw coming. The fracture that changes everything. The shadow on a scan that turns a routine check-up into a nightmare. Radiographers are often the first to knowโ€”but never the ones to break the news. They work at the intersection of precision and quiet responsibility, seeing what others canโ€™t.โ

Every X-ray and every ultrasound produces more than an imageโ€”itโ€™s a before-and-after moment. Hereโ€™s a look inside their world.โ
