𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘅 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮 🌏

NRF Chairman Mr Heng Swee Keat launched Singapore's first Max Planck Centres in Southeast Asia on 20 April at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, marking a significant milestone in the nation's longstanding research partnership with Germany.

The two new centres are:

🔬𝗠𝗮𝘅 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗸-𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆: using AI and automated experimentation to accelerate chemistry discoveries into scalable, sustainable solutions for energy and industry.

🌿𝗠𝗮𝘅 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗸-𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: combining art-science research to develop actionable frameworks for how communities understand and respond to environmental change.

Both centres will also nurture the next generation of researchers, creating pathways for young scientists to train across disciplines and build international networks early in their careers. In his Guest-of-Honour speech, Mr Heng reaffirmed Singapore's ambition to be a nexus where research delivers real-world impact, and expressed that the Max Planck Centres are a significant step forward in that vision.

It is a vision that is also embodied in Singapore's Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2030 (RIE2030) plan - that frontier science must go beyond the laboratory to deliver meaningful impact for industry, society, and the world.

The National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) is co-organising an exclusive guest lecture with the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 (𝗡𝗤𝗢), featuring 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗠. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀, 2025 Nobel Laureate in Physics.

With a focus on superconducting qubits, Prof Martinis has been at the forefront of developing high-fidelity qubits essential for scalable quantum processors. Prior to founding Qolab, he was a key figure behind Google’s quantum supremacy experiment, leading the hardware team that demonstrated a quantum computer outperforming the world’s best classical supercomputers.

The lecture is held in conjunction with the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝘆 (𝗡𝗤𝗙𝗙) 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, which brings together researchers, industry partners, and ecosystem stakeholders to showcase progress in quantum hardware and emerging collaborations.

Last week, the National Research Foundation Singapore – led by Permanent Secretary Prof Tan Chorh Chuan and CEO John Lim – and Enterprise Singapore met with the Research and Innovation Council of Finland, Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, and Research Council of Finland. The meeting exchanged views on each other’s research and innovation ecosystems, strategies and focus areas.

These discussions come on the heels of the launch of the Research, Innovation, and Enterprise (RIE) 2030, a $37 billion five-year strategic plan to advance research and innovation, and support Singapore’s economic and national priorities. Strengthening strategic partnerships is a critical aspect of RIE2030, and we look forward to forging closer bonds with more research institutions around the world.

The Singapore Scientific Conference 2025 (SSC2025), organised by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), with support from National Research Foundation Singapore, brings together researchers, companies and public agencies to explore how science and technology can shape a more sustainable and resilient future. Held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre under the theme “Forging a Sustainable Future Through Science & Technology”, the SSC2025 marks Singapore’s 60-year scientific journey and our next phase of collaboration for sustainability.

As Guest of Honour for the opening ceremony, NRF Chairman Heng Swee Keat shared how Singapore’s new $37billion RIE2030 plan, launched last Friday, will guide the next phase of our research, innovation and enterprise journey, sharpening focus on high-impact areas, growing talent and strengthening partnerships that turn ideas into impact.

Mr Heng also highlighted how international collaboration can help Singapore tackle shared challenges in areas such as sustainability, health and digital technologies.

NRF will launch the Singapore-Horizon Europe (SG-HE) Complementary Fund in RIE2030. The Fund will support research or activities conducted in Singapore by researchers from eligible Singapore entities, as part of Horizon Europe projects aligned with Singapore’s priority areas.

Singapore has unveiled 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵, 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬 (𝗥𝗜𝗘𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬) - a S$37 billion, five-year plan to strengthen our RIE ecosystem, and contribute to our economy and national priorities 🇸🇬. Endorsed at the 15th RIEC meeting chaired by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, it continues our commitment to invest about 1% of GDP in research, innovation and enterprise.

will focus on deepening research capabilities, developing high-calibre talent and driving impactful innovation. Key initiatives include:

• 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗥𝗜𝗘 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗴𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗥𝗜𝗘 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 will be launched to drive national research and translational efforts in areas of strategic importance.

• The first 𝗥𝗜𝗘 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗴𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. It will strengthen Singapore’s role in the global semiconductor R&D ecosystem, expand high-value R&D and advanced manufacturing locally, and create more opportunities for deep-tech start-ups and globally competitive companies.

• The first 𝗥𝗜𝗘 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆. This will advance research and innovation that can help maintain brain health and physical function as people age, and delay the onset and progression of cognitive and functional decline.

RIE2030 will grow our pool of 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 – from researchers and engineers to data scientists, entrepreneurs and programme managers – supported by new awards, scholarships and overseas entrepreneurial pathways.

Through RIE2030, Singapore will also strengthen its 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 by boosting innovation, commercialisation and access to capital. We will also deepen strategic global partnerships with leading institutions to advance research in priority areas 🤝

Together, we aim to keep Singapore at the forefront of scientific discovery and innovation-led growth, and produce tangible benefits for people and businesses here and around the world 🌍

On 19 November, the Embassy of Sweden in Singapore and Ambassador Anders Sjoberg hosted a dinner celebrating the 2025 Nobel Prizes. Guest of honour, Mr Heng Swee Keat, Chairman of the National Research Foundation Singapore, emphasised Singapore’s commitment to fostering research and innovation, nurturing the talent that drives it forward and cultivating an environment where diverse minds can collaborate meaningfully.

This year’s laureates, honoured in physics, chemistry and medicine, have been recognised for their groundbreaking work in quantum systems, advanced materials, and immune system regulation. These innovations align with our upcoming RIE2030 goals, including advancing world-class research in quantum computing and science, translating innovations into real world solutions, and advancing biomedical breakthroughs that enhance health and resilience.

As we look to RIE2030, Singapore remains committed to attracting top talent and supporting breakthroughs that create lasting societal and economic impact, and to pursuing world-class research and innovation.
