Dear friends,
Happy New Year, and may 2024 find you in the best of health and best of luck.
The SDA is thankful that, over the past year, Pasir Ris-Punggol residents have been warm and welcoming during all our house visits and walkabouts. It is heartening to chat with residents about important matters in their lives.
It is also heartening that needy residents have approached us, and allowed us to help them with their basic necessities and daily meals. We hope that things will get better for them in time to come.
On a personal note, I am very happy to receive birthday greetings from children in China and Indonesia (my birthday is in Dec!) My voluntary welfare organisation, DLSCC, has been helping to expand school facilities and fund education programmes in the poorer regions of these countries. It is my joy to see the children have proper schooling, nice toys, and a fun and meaningful childhood.
My son is young, and I worry many a time about what the future holds for him in Singapore. As it is today, wages cannot keep up with cost of living, many young families are caught in debt due to high housing prices, and our elderly find it difficult to retire with dignity and peace of mind. These problems have been festering for years and are now reaching a boiling point. I believe things will get worse, because government policies do not have a heart for the people.
This is why the SDA - PKMS and the Singapore Justice Party - will continue to speak up for all of us Common Singaporeans, and challenge poor policies that cause unfair suffering to many people. Scholars may be smart but they do not know everything. Sometimes, they must be plucked from the clouds so they can feel the ground.
We will continue to serve our fellow Singaporeans with all our heart, and we hope that our small actions will help to make every year better for every Singaporean.
Thank you, and Happy New Year.
Your friend,
Desmond Lim

Pasir Ris Residents Raise Concerns About Difficulties Faced Caring for Aging Parents
The SDA team had a good chat with Pasir Ris St 21 residents over the weekend!
Pasir Ris St 21 is a quaint estate, where most HDB flats sprung up about 30 years ago.
While there were many older residents, more younger Singaporeans have moved in to stay closer to their aging parents.
One of the key concerns raised by residents was the unaffordability of HDB flats, even as newer flats shrink in size.
For young Singaporeans who grew up in Pasir Ris and now have started their own families, it is difficult to live near their parents who are getting on in years.
Options like Tengah and Chua Chu Kang are too inconvenient, especially when added to inefficient public transport connections and the high cost of owning a car or motorcycle.
Even for those who have secured HDB flats nearby, the newer flats offer much less space than what they are used to, growing up in Pasir Ris.
One might have left the nest, but it is natural to want to continue caring for the family.
The SDA wants to look into this further and find ways to help Pasir Ris families stay tightly-knit.
Thank you, residents, for your warm welcome.
We’ll see you again soon!

Residents Raise Cost of Living Problems during House Visits at Pasir Ris St 51
Over the weekend, we visited residents of Pasir Ris St 51 to say hello and have a chat.
Many of them talked about how rising recent cost increases of basic goods such as food and groceries are affecting their lives.
They say that with the increase in public transport fares and water costs, in addition to the coming 1 percentage increase in GST, they will have to tighten their belts even further.
It is saddening to hear of their plight, and we understand because we too are affected.
What makes things worse is how the government squanders hundreds of millions of tax dollars on self-aggrandising monuments such as the Founders' Memorial while paying little heed to the real needs of Common Singaporeans.
We have assured residents that we will continue to engage them and raise their concerns.

Iswaran Probe Another Reminder of How the PAP Needs to be Probed to be Accountable
Dear friends,
When Iswaran was arrested by the CPIB, it was announced that he was "assisting with investigations".
Only when probed did the PAP-led government reveal that he had indeed been arrested.
When the Prime Minister declared that Iswaran's "salary" would be docked to $8500 per month, he made no mention that Iswaran would continue receiving his $16,000 MP allowance.
Again, only when probed did Singaporeans find out what PM Lee had conveniently left out.
Now, we learn that Iswaran has been suspended from his ministerial duties, but never officially suspended from his duties as an MP.
In the words of Leader of the House Indranee Rajah, PM Lee "requested" that Iswaran "cease his MP duties" as a "matter of party discipline".
The Prime Minister appoints his Cabinet, so he can suspend Iswaran from ministerial duties.
But he cannot suspend Iswaran from his duties as an MP because MPs are elected by voters.
Yet again, only when probed did the PAP-led government reveal this.
Prior to this was just the bold declaration by PM Lee that Iswaran has been instructed to stop performing both his ministerial duties and his MP duties while the CPIB investigation is ongoing.
So many times in just this one Iswaran case, the PAP has shown that it will not be upfront with Singaporeans unless it is subject to scrutiny.
This does not appear to be a government that deserves the trust of Singaporeans.
What Singaporeans should take further umbrage at is how the PAP disingenuously and scurrilously attempts to obfuscate matters.
Debating whether Iswaran should continue drawing his MP allowance, Ms Indranee hammered home the point that one is "innocent until proven guilty".
She then compared Iswaran's case to that of Workers' Party MPs Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap.
Both are under police investigation and drawing their MP allowance.
Ms Indranee conveniently left out the fact that the Workers' Party MPs are still doing their job as MPs.
Meanwhile, Iswaran is not doing even his basic MP duties because the PAP leadership instructed him not to.
How is that comparison fair, or even accurate?
Iswaran is out on bail and not under house arrest.
How will performing his basic MP duties prejudice the CPIB investigation more than if he went for Sunday brunch at a hawker centre?
What happened to “innocent until proven guilty”?
This looks more like a concerted political decision to hide Iswaran from public questioning by Common Singaporeans and the media, in case further probing opens up another can of worms.
Of course, the PAP will have its own, most likely differing, opinion.
An MP who stops performing his basic duties because he is instructed to by his party leader does not deserve to draw his MP allowance.
The PAP is the one that demands Iswaran cease doing his job of serving the people - it is not an official suspension by the government as we now know.
As a matter of principle, taxpayers should not be made to foot his monthly $16,000 MP bill on account of a party decision.
It is about time that Singaporeans stop paying for the PAP's politically irresponsible choices, the mistakes of their million-dollar whiter than whites, and the party's refusal to be upfront with us time and time again.
