Vesak commemorated in Singapore
The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore commemorated Vesak 2026 with a Dhamma Sermon and an alms-giving on Saturday, 16 May 2026, at the Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple.
Dahawal dana alms were offered to the resident monks of Sri Lankaramaya viharaya, followed by a dhamma sermon in the evening.
Dhamma sermon was delivered by Ven D. Gnanarathana Thero, a resident monk at Sri Lankaramaya Temple under the spiritual guidance of Ven K. Rathanananda Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of the Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple.
Delivering the sermon, Ven. Thero highlighted the fundamental teachings of Buddhism: the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path and the importance of shaping one's life accordingly. At the end of the Sermon, blessings were offered to the government and the people of Sri Lanka, the High Commissioner & the staff, and attendees.
The occasion also paid tribute to the late Hon. Lakshman Kadirgamar, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, who was instrumental in the recognition of Vesak as a day of international observance at the United Nations (UN).
The event was attended by members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community, representatives of the Singapore Sinhala Buddhist Association, the High Commissioner, the High Commission staff, and devotees. The attendees were served light refreshments after the sermon.
To mark Vesak week, the High Commission premises were adorned with Buddhist flags, colourful Vesak lanterns, and decorations, creating a vibrant Vesak atmosphere.

International tea day celebrated in Singapore with ‘APOORVA: unravel the aesthetics of Sri Lanka’
A cultural evening and Ceylon tea promotion event, APPORVA, was held in Singapore on 21 May 2026 at Goodman Arts Centre to celebrate International Tea Day.
The programme featured a curated presentation on Sri Lankan culture and heritage by the artistic director of Apsaras dance company, Mr Aravinth Kumarasamy, followed by a short cultural segment showcasing Kandyan dance and Bharatanatyam. The second segment showcased Ceylon tea, offering guests an exclusive tea-tasting experience and a networking session.
The tea segment was supported by Dilmah Ceylon Tea PLC and 1872 Clipper Tea Co. Clipper Tea offered a refreshing hot and cold-brew tea tasting experience, while Dilmah Tea provided specially curated Ceylon tea gift packs for guests as tokens of appreciation.
The event organised by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Apsaras Dance Company, was attended by over 30 Heads of Missions, spouses of Heads of Missions, diplomats, members of business community and friends of Sri Lanka in Singapore, representing Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, China, Costa Rica, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Mexico, Myanmar, Laos, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
The Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, who was in Singapore attending Asia Tech x 2026, graced the event as a Special Guest.

Sri Lanka represented at Asia Tech x Singapore 2026
The Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, represented Sri Lanka at Asia Tech x Singapore (ATxSG) 2026, held from 19 to 21 May 2026 at Capella Singapore. During the visit, the Deputy Minister engaged with senior government representatives, technology leaders, academic experts, and members of the Sri Lankan professional community in Singapore to strengthen cooperation in digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), fintech, cybersecurity, innovation, and AI adoption.
During the visit, the Deputy Minister had brief interactions with Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, Josephine Teo, Minister for Digital Development and Information of Singapore, and Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State at the Ministry of Digital Development and Information of Singapore, where discussions focused on digital transformation, AI governance, digital public infrastructure, and technology-driven economic growth.
A bilateral meeting was also held between the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy of Sri Lanka and the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of Vietnam, Hon. Bui Hoang Phuong, focusing on three key areas of cooperation: cyber security engagement, data and digital economy collaboration, and strengthening bilateral technology partnerships. During the meeting, the Vietnamese Deputy Minister extended an invitation to the Sri Lankan counterpart to undertake an official visit to Vietnam to further advance bilateral digital economy cooperation.
Further discussions were held with representatives from Adaptation AI, Google, and the Gates Foundation on AI adoption, digital inclusion, innovation, and technology-driven development.
Key highlights of the visit included discussions with Singapore Cooperation Enterprise, officials from AI Singapore, and Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN). The discussions focused on outcome-oriented programmes aimed at youth digital empowerment, public-sector digital capability development, AI adoption, and strengthening the innovation ecosystem across Sri Lanka.
The Deputy Minister also engaged with members of the Sri Lankan professional and technology community in Singapore at the High Commission of Sri Lanka, who expressed interest in supporting Sri Lanka’s digital economy initiatives through knowledge sharing, mentorship, skills transfer, and collaborative projects.
The Deputy Minister Weeraratne was accompanied by High Commissioner Senarath Dissanayake, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer (Actg) of GovTech Sri Lanka, Sanjaya Karunasena, Minister Counsellor (Commercial) of the High Commission, Bhagya Abeykoon, and Counsellor of the High Commission, Nuwandi Jayasuriya during his official engagements.
Sri Lanka’s participation at ATxSG 2026 provided a valuable platform to strengthen international partnerships, promote AI adoption and digital innovation, and enhance Sri Lanka’s presence within the regional digital economy landscape.
