Stories of Compassion Fund: We Will Be All Right

Lisa* is an upper primary school student. With absent parents, Lisa has been under the care of her loving grandparents from a very young age. Despite the absence of parental support, Lisa's grandparents have provided a stable and nurturing environment, ensuring that Lisa's basic needs are met. The household, which includes another young unemployed relative, relies solely on the grandparents' income, which is stretched thin to cover essential expenses such as food, clothing, and school supplies. Lisa's grandparents work tirelessly to provide as much support as possible, often seeking assistance from social welfare programs to bridge the gaps.

Her grandfather was injured in a road accident a few years ago, and is currently not working, impacting the family’s financial stability. He is undergoing recovery, which includes physical therapy, with medical bills pending support from Medifund. The grandmother has had to quit her own job to care for the grandfather, which has resulted in her neglecting her own health in the process. She hopes to return to work when the grandfather is able to self-care.

The family has been known to social services for several years and receives cash assistance from government agencies, along with ad hoc support from other social service organisations. Current priorities are for Lisa’s grandfather to focus on recovery and finding employment once his health improves. Lisa’s grandmother will also resume work when caregiving responsibilities lessen. Lisa is encouraged to prioritize her studies.

At the time of her grandfather’s accident, Compassion Fund stepped in with prompt financial support, and, importantly, also assisted Lisa’s family with seeking further support from various other government agencies. This ensures substantive incomes support for the family, and not having to fret over finances is one less burden on Lisa’s family. With strong familial support, there is cause for optimism in overcoming their obstacles.
