As residents may know, in Feb last year, NEA has issued an advisory discouraging swimming at Sembawang beach due to elevated levels of bacteria in the water. However, water activities like kayaking and sailing can continue. Water quality is not expected to contaminate fishes caught from the waters off Sembawang beach.

Agencies have found that the identified sources of the pollution are local – discharges from various sources, cumulatively leading to elevated bacteria levels in the waterways. The agencies have stepped up efforts to reduce discharges, including advising stakeholders on good hygiene practices and conducting inspections. The water quality has improved, but not yet at a level where swimming can safely resume. The next review will be in July 2025.

Sembawang beach is a lovely destination in our town. We can continue to enjoy the beach, the park and also participate in water activities (I am going kayaking next month). But do heed NEA’s advice and avoid swimming in the waters.
