Feedback from one of the attendees of the Skills Development Group Learning Programme: Food Security: Food Safety and Food Hygiene

From the session we had with Aunty Tima,I learnt a lot about food safety, preparation, and hygiene.
In my own understanding, food safety is how we design food to prevent it from contamination and ensure its safety for consumption
Whiles food preparation is how we prepare our food to prevent it from spoiling ,using the right preservation and storage methods thus preventing it from hazards like bacterial contamination and spread of diseases.Disposal of food is also important when it comes to food safety, because improper disposal of waste can foster bacterial growth ,attracts pests and creat conditions for mold and mycotoxins.
According to Aunty Tima, food hygiene is about making sure your food is prepared in a clean environment, free from bacteria ,dust, and anything none friendly.Praticing a proper food hygiene also involves washing hands thoroughly, covering hair and washing every object used in the process.Care most be taken when it comes to washing fruits and vegetables, and also raw meat and seafood as PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
All this being said,it is important that we adhere to all the necessary precautions when it comes to food safety as HEALTH IS WEALTH.

Introducing the Sierra Leone Australia Alumni Association Skills Development Programme Lesson 1 Food Security: Food Safety and Hygiene . We held the first training on the 7th of August 2025 on Microsoft Teams after a first Whatsapp call.

The main challenge was understanding how to log into Microsoft Teams and also their time availability based on their shifts. We have agreed to small team meetings and using them as trainers to work within their communities of practice and train their peers and local food vendors.

For now we are piloting the training, understanding what are the information needs, tailoring the slides, production in local languages then rolling out to all target population.

If you are interested to join the Skills Development Learning Programme send us a message on Facebook Messenger or an email to [email protected]
