49 YEARS AGO TODAY IN SIERRA LEONE'S POLITICAL HISTORY AS
SIAKA PROBYN STEVENS IMPOSED UDI AND ASSUMED
TOTALITARIAN CONTROL SHORTLY THEREAFTER.
THE EXISTENTIAL QUAGMIRE THAT FOLLOWED SINCE THEN.

Forty nine years ago today April 19,19,1971, in contemporary Sierra Leone,Siaka Probyn Stevens without going through the constitutional prescription imposed his own UDIon the nation just like Ian Smith of then Rhodesia who imposed UDI. Within twenty four hours of his unconstitutional action , fired two heads of state back to back.
Sir.Banja Tejan-Sie the last Governor General from September 1970,to March 31st,1971.
Then Chief Justice Christopher Okoro Elnathan Cole became acting Governor General following the abrupt dismissal of Sir.Banja at the end of March 1971.
He performed the duties of Governor General albeit in an acting capacity until April 19,1971 ,when republic was imposed and on the very day,he was sworn in as president of the nascent republic.
Within 24 hours of the new dispensation however with the help of Solomon Pratt and others,eased out the president from office Mr.Christopher Elnathan Okoro Cole and named himself executive president by combining the offices of head of government and that of state into one with totalitarian powers.
The chief factor for the precipitate political commitment emanated from the attempt by his once friend John Amadu Bangura who along with few officers in the army sought to jettison him from power but the attempt was badly planned and poorly executed from start which is an entirely different episode I intend to revisit at the appropriate time.
It is however interesting to note Siaka Stevens prior to his hasty and unconstitutional imposition of republic had earlier appointed his friend the then Speaker of parliament Sir.Emile Fashole Luke to collate public input about the republican move but the learned jurist had not even held his first public session on the matter
when he pulled the rug from underneath him without any prior notice of his intention to the effect.
This was the catalyst that precipitated the fallout between them.
Sir.Emile as it will be recalled was the very first African following the departure of Justice Arthur Dobbs and his British colleagues who sat on the nation's high court but his open pro APC activism on the bench factored into why Sir.Milton Margai catapulted the relatively moderate Sir.Salako Ambrose Benka- Coker over him as the First African Chief Justice.
Sir.Banja on his part was removed with ignominy from office apparently for being to close to Brigadier John Bangura for his comfort especially so with the army chief's attempt to usurp the executive authority of the state by force of arms.
There were other factors pointing to the forest of red flags between the two men that I will deal with subsequently which might have also factored into the tense relationship between both of them.
The synopis of the April 19 ,1971,UDI by Siaka Probyn Stevens that changed the trajectory of politics in contemporary Sierra Leone for the worst.
