Scandalous UK media report that First Lady Fatima Bio abused UK Council social facility privileges
Council Flat Abuse and Sierra Leone’s First Family. Part 1
The British media are up in arms over the First Lady of Sierra Leone, Fatima Bio's continued ownership of a council flat allocated to her many years ago, when she was struggling to make ends meet in London. His husband, now president of Sierrra Leone, squatted with her up on to 2018 when Julius Maada Bio became president of his country.
The British media and many others in the UK argue that it is "morally abhorrent" for the Sierra Leone First Family to continue to hold on to a council flat given their current status.
But Mrs Bio is unperturbed. Responding to the BBC about her ownership of the said council flat, she said on Tuesday that she has done nothing wrong because she has been paying rent for the property belonging to her British children.
While it might not be illegal, many believe it is unacceptable for individuals who appear to be swimming in affluence to hold on to such social facilities. In a 2025 explosive report, a British organisation investigating corruption and organised crimes, the "Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project | OCCRP", claimed that Mrs Fatima Bio has acquired several luxury properties across West Africa worth tens of millions of pounds.

The parliamentary leader of the All Peoples Congress Sierra Leone, Hon. Kargbo has written quite a detailed and very direct open letter to Leone's 🇸🇱 PRESIDENT JULIUS MAADA BIO, raising serious concerns about what has become the alarming rate of the co***ne and other drug trafficking busts linked to .
The main opposition leader in the Parliament of Sierra Leone also made reference to the fugitive Dutch drug baron Jos Leijdekkers "whose prolonged presence in Sierra Leone has already generated enormous international concern and embarrassment."
"Most troublingly, the Spanish Interior Minister publicly linked the operation
to the notorious Dutch-Moroccan “Mocro Mafia” criminal organization, a
network repeatedly associated by European investigators with fugitive drug
trafficker Jos Leijdekkers, also known as “Bolle Jos,” whose prolonged
presence in Sierra Leone has already generated enormous international
embarrassment and concern," said Hon Abdul Kargbo.

"The country is ranked 79th out of 180 nations in 2026, with a score of 57.06, down from 56th place and a score of 66.36 in 2025. The decline reflects worsening safety conditions for reporters, economic fragility of media outlets, and political pressures that have eroded gains made after the repeal of criminal defamation laws in 2020."
