Lieutenant General Paulino Matip Nhial was a South Sudanese military figure who played a significant role during the Second Sudanese Civil War. Born in 1951, he was a key member of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and later became the leader of the South Sudan Defense Forces (SSDF).

Gen. Paulino was known for his involvement in the split within the SPLA/M in the late 1990s, which led to the formation of the SSDF and his subsequent rise to power within the faction.

Matip remained a significant historical figure in the complex political landscape of South Sudan. His alliances and rivalries with other influential figures, as well as his control over strategic areas in the country

General Paulino Matip Nhial's legacy played a crucial role in the South Sudanese struggle for independence. Late General Paulino Matip Nhial was a community police man in the court of Chief Francis Nyir Gatluak in the old Sudan.

He joined the Anya Nya nya ll at Bilpham in 1975 under the command of Gordon Koang Chuol. He was promoted to the rank of 1st Lt in the Any Nya II command in 1978.

When the Anya Nya II was defeated in Bilpham battle by the SPLM/A in 1983, the Anya Nya II moved to the South Sudan country side under the command of commander Akuot Atem and Col G*i tut Yang. When Akuot Atem and G*i tut were killed in 1984, William Abdallah Chuol took over the command of the Anya Nya II. Paulino Matip was arrested by William Abdallah Chuol Deng.

He was acussed of persuading Bentiu sons to desert with him to Bentiu. Paulino Matip Nhial escaped from jail with Gen David Gatluak Domai and late General Michael Kel Gatwech Phan and on their way to bentiu, they met with the deserters of Tiger and Tumsah battalions in Laak area under command of sergeant Gatbel Rolnyang Kai.

The deserters of Tiger and Tumsah battalions appointed General Matip as their commander and proceeded to western Upper Nile with General Paulino Matip.

When they arrived in western Upper Nile (Bentiu), they were welcomed by the Anya nya II forces that were already operating in western Upper Nile at the time under command of Paul Thong Ruai deputized by Robert Ruai Kuol Jal. Paulino Matip Nhial was selected by the Anya Nya II Camps to be their Leader.

When Major General Paul Dor Lampuar came to western Upper Nile in 1985, he integrated paulino Matip and his Anya Nya II forces into the SPLM/A with the rank of captain and signed Paulino Matip as his deputy and commander of Petrol battalions at the same time. Paulino Matip fell out with Paul Dor Lampuar and formed his own Anya nya II command in western Upper Nile in 1985, and he reported his defection to William Abdallah Chuol Deng,

In 1988, Paulino Matip became the leader of the whole Anya Nya II command in western Upper Nile and Eastern Upper Nile and was joined by Late General Gordon Koang Chuol on 25th January 1988. Paulino Matip Nhial was appointed Chief of SSDF by Dr Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon during Khartoum Peace Agreement that was signed in 1997.

In 2005, after the CPA signed, General Paulino Matip Nhial decided to join the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) in January 2006 known as "Juba Declaration."

He was appointed Deputy Commander in Chief (D/C-In-C) of the SPLA, a position he held until he died on 22nd August 2012 in Karen Hospital in Kenya after a short illness with the diabetes complication.
