WHO CAN BE A LEADER?
Everybody was born to be a leader.
A human being, by nature, was created by God and placed in charge of Mother Earth and every living thing in it.
That was God's calling.
Oftentimes, when such a question comes up? People begin to look out there but seldom realize that leadership potential is within you waiting to be unlocked.
Dr. Myles Munroe in his great book "Becoming A Leader" challenged the Greek philosophers like Plato, Aristotle and Socrates who defined a Leader as somebody who belong to a particular class with unique character traits of a leader. He postulated that it's unGodly thinking. That God did not place any man to have dominant over another man. This is human design that brought such a system to have other people as leaders and others as slaves, or followers, or subordinates, or subjects.
Perhaps, if leaders were to be some people with unique qualities, then Moses, King David, Gedion, Mother Theresa, and Abraham Lincoln would not have been the greatest leaders in history. Check their biographies, and you will think otherwise.
Until you have a defined purpose to accomplish in your life, your leadership potential will be live.
Everyone has a leadership potential dormant in him that needs to be unlocked or awakened.
I am convinced that every human person was born to be a leader. But the majority of them will die as followers. Because our culture was designed to suffocate your leadership potential. They taught you to be a servant, and they train you to get a job.
From the bibilical context, when God created earth, He created man with such responsibility, who He created in His image with all Godly given capacity to exercise his authority with direct responsibility from His Creator.
Every human person was created and wired by our Creator with unique roles in fulfillment of your purpose on earth. You were not born by coincidence or by chance without your purpose to benefit humanity.
Now, let's dive deeper.
Leadership is the capacity to influence others by inspiration. In other words, it is also the ability to direct others to accomplish something meaningful.
It can also be seen as responding to responsibilities. Simple examples such as the influence of a friend on another, a spouse on another, a pastor on a congregation, a supervisor on employees, etc.
Leadership is a process driven by purpose, conviction, vision, passion, and inspiration.
The Six President of the United States, Quincy Adams, had this to say on leadership,
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader."
Again, British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery also said, "Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose, and the character which inspires confidence."
The main foundation of leadership is purpose and vision. One has to have a deeper purpose in his life that drives him and a clear vision.
"If you don't know where you are going, you probably end up somewhere else." Said by Lawrence J. Peter.
"Leadership is discovering a sense of significance in one's generation and making a commitment to deliver that significance as an obligation." Dr. Myles Munroe emphasized. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. also said, "I submit to you that if a man hasn't discovered something to die for, he isn't fit to live."
King Solomon in Proverbs 29: 18, he declared, "Where there is no vision people perish."
"Until you are willing to die for what you are living for, you can not become a true leader." Dr. Myles Munroe emphasized.
Consider the following for the development of a leader.
1. Before one becomes a leader, he must know and fully understand who he is and what he stands for in life. That is expressed as the purpose of one's life.
Dr. Myles Munroe asserted that "to become a leader, you need to discover your true self by uncovering a meaning and purpose for your life that gives you an understanding of your uniqueness as a person. This understanding of your true self will give birth to your vision."
2. This book stated clearly that a vision is a mental picture that one believes in beyond what he can see in the present. Without a simplified, documented, and well planned vision, there's no leadership.
And again, Dr. Myles Munroe stated that "to become a leader, you must catch hold of a vision of a future that reflects the fulfillment of your life's purpose."
3. My understanding of leadership is that one must be inspired by the drive of personal vision. This is where a leader can inspire others for a shared purpose of a shared future. Dr. Myles Munroe emphasized that "to become a leader, you must be inspired so that you can inspire others."
4. To become a true leader, you must be sensitive that leadership is God's greatest treasure to man. When you acknowledge spiritual accountability and are aware of its obligation to divine authority, you become unstoppable."
5. It is a passion that makes leadership effective.
To become a leader, you need to have a passion for your purpose—a passion you express in the way you live your life.
6. True leadership is commitment to people.
To be people's leader, you must meet the needs of others— empathy, love, recognition, appreciation, encouragement, integrity, trust, faith, etc. In essence, a true leader must have a strong character, and a strong character is built by empowering others.
Leadership set standards for people and influences them positively, giving them hope and deep conviction about their own abilities to achieve greatness.
7. Leadership never compromises vision for the sake of gaining popularity.
To become a leader, you must learn to discipline your life according to the goals and objectives of your purpose.
8. A leader must possess strategic planning techniques for his long-term and short-term growth. He must also need to know the resources he has, what resources are lacking, and what needs to be done to secure such resources.
The greatest leadership coach and pastor, Dr. Myles Munroe emphasized that "leader must always closely monitor 'the big three' personnel, finances, planning.
Effective leaders are also good stewards of the physical and financial resources for which they are responsible."
9. As a leader, you must distinguish between what is good and what is right. And between what is urgently calling and what is important for the purpose.
Again, Dr. Munroe stated that "leadership must always have a narrow agenda and a concentrated to-do list."
Planning is the sequential establishment of priorities. A leader set priorities, which are set goals, and disseminate them to his team in fulfillment to the vision.
10. True leadership is prioritizing to prepare others for the leadership positions as the next leaders.
Secure and mature leaders are not threatened by the successful development of those whom they are leading. The ultimate goal of true leadership is not to maintain followers but by producing future leaders.
11."Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself. It is that simple and that difficult...leaders are people who are able to express themselves fully." Warren Bennis asserted. He also said that "no leader sets out to be a leader....the point is to become yourself, use yourself completely—all your skills, gifts, and energies—inorder to make your vision manifest."
"God created you with the capacity to lead. Though you were born to lead, you must become a leader, just as one may be born a male but must become a man." Dr. Myles Munroe stated.
