Today the Department conducted a site visit to Mbava (Sigwe), specifically at the Mpakeni project site near the dam, where we engaged with the project team and representatives from the Makhanya traditional healers (tinyanga).
The Makhanya group had been invited by the project team to harvest medicinal plants located within the project area, which is scheduled for clearing (approximately 5000 hectares) for agricultural development. This initiative provided them with an important opportunity to sustainably collect plant resources for their livelihoods before land transformation.
During the visit, we supervised the first access by the tinyanga to the site and facilitated the issuance of two permits for non-local participants.
Both the project team and the Makhanya group expressed their appreciation to the Department for enabling this process. They highlighted that this is a significant and positive step, as communities have often raised concerns about losing access to valuable natural resources during project developments without being given such opportunities, despite the existence of CMPs.
Additionally, the exercise provided valuable insight into the diversity of medicinal plant species present in the area.
