Today, the Eswatini Environment Authority had the privilege of engaging the school Eco Clubs under the Mbabane Municipality at Thokoza as part of the implementation of the Green Schools Standard in Eswatini.

The session introduced teachers to the holistic Green Schools approach, which goes beyond classroom learning to embed sustainability across every aspect of school life. Through the Green Schools Standard, schools are encouraged to strengthen:
๐ŸŒฑ Green school governance
๐Ÿซ Sustainable school facilities
๐Ÿค Community engagement
๐Ÿ“š Teaching and learning for sustainability
โ™ป๏ธ Responsible resource management and environmental stewardship

By equipping Eco Club teachers with the knowledge and tools to implement the Green Schools Standard, we are strengthening their capacity to foster environmental awareness and inspire meaningful action within their schools and surrounding communities.
The Eswatini Environment Authority remains committed to working with partners to promote environmental education and build greener, more sustainable schools across the country.

The Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) is currently participating in a three-day Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Training on Results-Based Management (RBM) and Project Results Frameworks, held at the UN House in Mbabane.

The training, conducted under the POPs and UPOPs Project which is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through UNDP Eswatini and being implemented by the Eswatini Environment Authority, aims to strengthen the capacity of the institution in results-based planning, monitoring, reporting and impact measurement.

For the Eswatini Environment Authority, this training strengthens our ability to effectively monitor and evaluate environmental programmes and projects, ensuring that interventions achieve measurable and sustainable outcomes that are also inclusive. The knowledge gained will further enhance our work in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) monitoring, environmental compliance, environmental education and awareness, and the implementation of national environmental initiatives.

By strengthening our Monitoring and Evaluation capacity, we improve our ability to make evidence-based decisions, track environmental performance, promote accountability, and continuously improve the effectiveness of our programmes for the benefit of people, biodiversity, and the environment.

๐ŸŒฟ Strong monitoring leads to informed action, better environmental governance and lasting impact for present and future generations.

Today, Eswatini joined the global community in commemorating UNCCD Day 2026 at Mkhiweni Inkhundla under the theme:

๐ŸŒฑ โ€œRangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.โ€

The event began with a site visit to the Embelebeni Rangeland Project under the Mbuluzi Ecosystem Restoration Project. There, trees were planted and symbolic activities were carried out, including placing stones in gabions to hold soil and prevent erosion. The rest of the programme then continued at Mkhiweni Inkhundla.

Held in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC), and the Mbuluzi Ecosystem Restoration Project, the day brought together government officials, community leaders, development partners and local communities to reaffirm our commitment to sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration.

Rangelands are essential for livestock, rural livelihoods, biodiversity, and food security. With climate change, land degradation, overgrazing, and invasive alien species threatening these ecosystems, collective action is needed now more than ever to build a resilient Eswatini.

๐ŸŒ Desertification and Drought Day 2026 | 17 June 2026

Tomorrow, Eswatini joins the world in commemorating Desertification and Drought Day, observed annually under the leadership of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œRangelands: Recognize, Respect, Restore,โ€ reminds us of the vital role that healthy rangelands play in supporting biodiversity, livestock production, food security, water resources, and the livelihoods of communities across Eswatini and beyond.

Desertification, land degradation, and drought are among the greatest environmental challenges of our time. As pressure on our land increases through unsustainable land use, climate change, overgrazing, and deforestation, it becomes even more important for all of us to take action to protect and restore our natural resources.

๐Ÿค How can you commemorate the day tomorrow?
โœ…Plant and care for indigenous trees.
โœ…Participate in community restoration activities.
โœ…Practice sustainable grazing and land management.
โœ…Share knowledge about protecting our environment.
โœ…Commit to actions that help conserve soil, water and biodiversity.

๐Ÿ“ธ We want to hear from you!

Strengthening environmental law enforcement through collaboration and capacity building โš–๏ธ.

The Eswatini Environment Authority, in collaboration with the Forestry Department under the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, is currently equipping Eswatiniโ€™s law enforcement officers with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively address environmental crimes.

Todayโ€™s engagement brought together officers from the Manzini Region, including representatives from the Manzini Regional Headquarters, Manzini Police Station and Matsapha Police Station. The training sessions focused on key environmental legislation, including the Eswatini Environment Management Act, 2002 and the Flora Protection Act, 2000 enhancing understanding of environmental offences, regulatory requirements and enforcement procedures.

These capacity-building initiatives are essential in strengthening partnerships between environment authority and law enforcement agencies, ensuring more effective prevention, detection, and prosecution of environmental crimes. Building on previous joint site inspections conducted with the Royal Eswatini Police Service, the sessions reaffirm the importance of a coordinated approach to protecting Eswatiniโ€™s natural resources and environmental heritage for present and future generations.
