MI and Lao PDR Explore Partnership for a More Resilient Mekong

How can regional cooperation turn climate challenges into practical solutions for farmers and communities?

On October 20, 2026, MI Executive Director Dr. Anoulak Kittikhoun met with H.E. Dr. Linkham Duangsavanh, Lao PDR’s Minister of Agriculture and Environment, to explore cooperation on innovation, climate–water resilience and agrifood transformation. The Minister agreed in principle to work toward an MOU between the Ministry and MI.

Key areas include establishing a Mekong Innovation Lab with national research partners to develop low-cost, sustainable solutions; mobilizing climate finance for integrated climate–water–energy–food initiatives; and transforming agrifood systems to strengthen regional value chains.

From climate-informed decision support to more resilient agrifood systems, the goal is to turn shared challenges into practical solutions for Lao PDR and the wider Mekong region.

What happens after a successful project ends? 💬

Across the Mekong subregion, innovative projects are delivering real results. But turning them into lasting, large-scale impact takes more than funding. It takes the right partners, technology, expertise, and market connections.

That is why the Mekong–Republic of Korea Cooperation Forum 2026 is hosting the Innovative Finance Marketplace: Connecting Projects with Finance, Technology and Markets.

The Marketplace brings together MKCF-funded projects, investors, development partners, solution providers, and private sector actors to:
➡️Showcase scalable solutions
➡️Build new partnerships
➡️Explore financing, technical assistance, and technology partnerships
➡️Open pathways to replicate proven models

Transformative projects should not end when funding does.

Limited seats remain. Join us on 27 October 2026 in Bangkok and be part of the conversation.

From One-off Projects to Lasting Core Functions: Making MI Indispensable

How can MI turn regional cooperation into lasting impact? This question captures the ambition behind MI’s Strategic Plan 2026–2030—and the new direction that will shape its next chapter.

On October 19, 2026, MI staff came together for the Annual Work Planning Workshop to reflect on Year 1 and turn the Institute’s strategic direction into a shared roadmap for 2027. Staff revisited the logic of the Strategic Plan and its four program areas, refined departmental priorities, and mapped ongoing and future initiatives against funding opportunities and new partnership models.

At the heart of the discussions was a fundamental shift: from fragmented, project-by-project delivery to strategic core functions in convening regional platforms, investing in research and development, and transforming experience and knowledge into practical products, services and learning programs that address the region’s evolving needs and most challenging problems.

Throughout the workshop, Executive Director Dr. Anoulak Kittikhoun encouraged staff to think beyond the familiar, embrace new possibilities, set ambitious goals and work together to advance the vision of an integrated, prosperous and resilient Greater Mekong Subregion.
