The Surin Project works within the Elephant Study Centre in the Surin Province of Thailand. This study centre is NOT an Elephant Sanctuary.

The Surin Project is a unique and innovative concept aimed at improving the living conditions of captive Asian elephants by providing economic sustainability for their owners through responsible volunteer tourism. All of the Elephants are on chains for most of the day, sometimes with no shelter or shade from the sun. There is also an Elephant Circus show and Elephant riding in the centre. The Surin Project came in to provide an alternative form of Elephant based eco-tourism, to show the mahouts and the government that tourists are interested in this type of tourism instead of seeing them performing tricks or for Elephant riding, and that it can be sustainable for the community, as well as giving the Elephants better welfare and care.
