Other supporters include M&S, Danone, Bidfood, Green Alliance, Barnardo's, WWF, the British Medical Association, British Heart Foundation and the British Dental Association.

The letter urges cross-party support to build on last year's policy paper, bringing in reforms to achieve food security, meet net zero and nature-positive commitments, tackle obesity and reduce inequalities. "The central role which good food plays in supporting health must be harnessed in order to secure economic productivity and growth," it says.

A term of government can deliver important wins; but only legislation can lock in change and long-term stability, shielding progress from political cycles. With food system strategies and legislation under way in all the devolved nations, this is an excellent opportunity to consider how legislation introduced in Westminster could be of benefit to all."

Long-term empty properties across the UK should soon be brought back into use as affordable homes through a partnership between the Nationwide Foundation the Resonance Community Developers (RCD) Fund.

At a time of growing housing demand, the project focuses on unlocking the potential of properties that have stood empty for six months or more, with the goal of transforming them into safe, affordable homes and helping to regenerate communities.

The Nationwide Foundation was launched in 1997 by the Nationwide Building Society as an independent charity. Resonance was created in 2002 as a social impact fund to connect capital to social enterprise. The commitment includes a £1m investment from Nationwide Foundation, matched with government grant funding, creating an initial fund of at least £1.67m to support RCD projects across the UK.

The project is designed not only to deliver homes in the short term, but also to build evidence that repurposing empty properties can be scaled as a long-term solution to the UK’s housing challenges. By reinvesting funds as loans are repaid, the initiative is expected to recycle capital and extend its impact over time.

RCD aims to bring 30 to 40 empty homes back into use with this investment, with potential for further scale as money is recycled.

A co-operative solar park has just opened in Obinitsa, Setomaa, marking the genesis of community-based energy in Estonia.

One of the first steps towards community-owned energy in Estonia, the project is a response to spiralling energy costs. The rooftop solar array has capacity for 62kW of energy generation, a 50kW inverter plus 50kW of battery storage, installed by Oma Elekter, a newly formed energy co-op with 15 members, supported by EU and regional funding.

The project's location is the South Estonian Garden Produce Processing Centre, a community-oriented facility set to open later this year, enabling local agricultural producers to preserve, process, and market their products, and supply fresh organic food to local schools. The energy generated will go directly to powering the facility.

It could be the first of many co-operative energy projects in Estonia, which is seeing increasing momentum behind community-driven renewable energy. Estonia's first energy co-operative, TÜ Energiaühistu, is focused on community-owned solar and wind parks, allowing residents to invest and earn stable income. In Jõgeva County, efforts are already under way to build a co-operative energy community with a similar rooftop solar installation.

Social Care Co-operatives in the UK, produced by the Centre for Care, the Centre for Adult Social Care Research (Care), and supported by Impact, examines the advantages of co‑ops and argues that reform of commissioning, and the building of partnerships, can support their growth to provide “fairer, better quality, community-rooted care”.

The findings build on earlier work from Reclaiming Our Regional Economies (Rore), a partnership of organisations including Co-operatives UK.

It found that private care companies operating in those regions made £256m in profit over three years, with more than a third owned by private equity firms, companies based in tax havens, or both.

The report also found that £45m was paid out in dividends to shareholders, while frontline care workers were often paid below the living wage – “a contributing factor to the current social care crisis, with under-paid, overworked staff and the knock-on effect this has on the quality of care”.

Meanwhile, researchers for Social Care Co-operatives in the UK found that with no shareholders to pay, social care co-operatives “reinvest their surplus in innovation, improving service provision, supporting local communities and boosting local economies through locally sourcing equipment, services and staff“.

The report recommends a phased pathway for supporting the establishment and growth of social care co-operatives over the short, mid and long term.
