🌱 Change begins where you are.
Today the world observes the International Day for Biological Diversity under the theme "Acting locally for global impact." A a reminder that each of us has a role to play.
In the seed sector, plant breeders, seed producers, and regulators make decisions at a local and national level that determine which crop varieties remain in circulation and which traits are preserved.
APSA: The Asia and Pacific Seed Association is committed to maintaining genetic diversity in crops, upholding responsible seed trade, and supporting the science that keeps variety pipelines viable.
Local decisions in the seed value chain ripple outward.
On , we're proud to be part of that work!

The APSA- Vegetable Center Consortium Workshop’s 10th Anniversary brought together participants from 33 companies across 14 countries 🤝 🌏, offering a reminder that long-term progress in agriculture is rarely built in isolation. It is built through shared effort, sustained partnerships, and a willingness to invest in outcomes larger than any single organization can achieve alone. 🍅 🫑 🌶️
Last week, that effort has grown into a regional network of breeders, researchers, and seed companies 👩🔬 👨🏻🔬 working across borders to address some of the seed sector’s pressing challenges, from climate pressure and emerging pests to shifting market expectations and the growing demand for resilient, nutritious crops. 🥕 🌽 🍉
What makes the Consortium distinctive is not only the exchange of breeding material, but the trust and continuity behind it. Public research institutions and private seed companies, including many smaller companies with limited R&D capacity, are contributing to and benefiting from a shared pipeline of innovation.
For many smaller seed companies, access to disease-resistant breeding lines and shared R&D pathways 🧬 has helped shorten breeding timelines and strengthen their ability to respond to evolving challenges.
Since 2017, more than 17,000 seed samples have been exchanged, while over 200 commercial varieties now contain WorldVeg Consortium breeding lines. These are not abstract numbers. They reflect years of breeding work, adaptation, field testing, and collaboration aimed at helping quality seed move more efficiently from research into farmers’ fields and regional markets.

Healthy plants are the foundation of agricultural productivity and food security.
Safeguarding crops ensures stable yields, stronger agricultural systems, and secure harvests, providing food for all. Healthy plants also help keep ecosystems thriving and protect biodiversity.
For , that makes the day especially relevant. The work of supporting phytosanitary consultation, encouraging pubic-private sector cooperation, and advancing science-based approaches to safe seed movement is part of the wider effort to keep plants healthy and food systems secure across APAC.
Plant health rarely gets attention until something goes wrong. By then, the cost is already high.
Plant biosecurity protects crops from pests and diseases before they spread. Prevention is far more cost-effective than eradication.
