Driverless vehicles are no longer just a concept. 🚗🇨🇭

Since 2025, Switzerland has introduced a legal framework allowing certain 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 on public roads. This includes motorway automation, self-parking features and driverless vehicles operating in defined pilot areas.

Projects such as iamo in Furttal (canton Zurich) are already testing automated vehicles in real traffic conditions to better understand how the technology performs, how users react to it and how it could complement public transport.

🤖 At the same time, Zurich is becoming a meeting point for discussions around automated mobility. In May 2026, the city hosted the 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 (SAAM), bringing together authorities, researchers and industry actors.

Discover the extraordinary world of Swiss painter Theo Meier (1908–1982), whose life and artistic legacy were deeply intertwined with Thailand.

The Embassy of Switzerland is pleased to present a unique exhibition at the Swiss Residence in Bangkok, featuring a rare selection of Meier’s paintings – most of which are being shown to the public for the very first time.

The exhibition also sheds light on Meier’s close friendship with Prince Sanidh Rangsit, a connection that inspired the artist to settle in Thailand and create remarkable works here.

Visitors are warmly invited to explore the exhibition free of charge on selected dates:

How do researchers detect pain in lab animals?

🐭 At ETH Zürich, researchers developed GrimACE, a system combining computer vision and machine learning to 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗲.

The goal is to improve animal welfare in research through faster, more consistent and more standardised pain assessment.

The project follows the 3R principles: Replace. Reduce. Refine.

𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘀 – 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 🇨🇭 !

✋ Have you ever seen a democracy where laws are passed by raising hands in a town square?

🇨🇭 Every year, on the first Sunday of May, the people of canton of Glarus gather for one of the world's last remaining open-air democratic assemblies: the 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲. No ballots. No booths. No anonymity. Just citizens voting in full view of one another by raising their hands. Apart from Glarus, Appenzell Innerrhoden also holds a Landsgemeinde.

It's 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺. This isn't just tradition. It's real lawmaking, binding, constitutional decisions made by a show of hands. The two cantons keep alive this centuries-old ritual, dating back to the 13th century.

🏔️ Yes, we usually don't brag about it – but some Swiss achievements are still worth mentioning:

• Files more patents per capita than any other nation.
• 32 Nobel Prize winners from a population of 9 million.
• Two universities in the world's top 10.
• Topped the Global Innovation Index for 15 consecutive years.
• Gave the world the internet. At CERN – by accident.

👇 Can you think of any Swiss innovations?

Who runs Switzerland? Not just one, but thousands! 🇨🇭

🤝 Switzerland is a federal state. In practice, this means that political power is shared by

• the Confederation
• the 26 cantons
• 2,110 communes

📜 Each level has its own special role to play in governing. The cantons and communes have authority over a wide range of matters (e.g. schools, hospitals, tax and policing) and a great deal of autonomy. The federal government only takes on tasks that the cantons and communes can’t manage alone.

𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 was one of the founding principles of the Swiss Confederation in 1848. It allows the different aspects of Switzerland, with its four national languages and large geographical differences, to coexist.

🏔️🇨🇭 How a mountain hut became a high-altitude research lab

🪄Perched at 2,883 meters in the Swiss Alps, the 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮 𝗛𝘂𝘁 was developed by ETH Zurich as an innovative alpine building designed to operate in extreme conditions. Its distinctive shape and reflective aluminium surface allow it to integrate into its environment while optimising performance.

👨‍🔬Whilst the hut can accommodate 120 persons, it also functions as a laboratory: the building produces around 90% of its own energy using solar technology and continuously collects data on energy consumption, climate and building performance.

This combination of research and infrastructure makes it a model for 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in challenging environments.
