Africa Day 2026

The African Embassies in Thailand, comprising the Embassy of Morocco, South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, Libya and Nigeria hosted Africa Day 2026 at the Rembrandt Hotel Bangkok on 20 May 2026. The celebration was honoured by H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuanketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, as the Guest of Honour, reaffirming Thailand's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Africa under the Thailand-Africa Initiative (TAI).

The event was in line with the spirit of Agenda 2063, it celebrated Africa's unity, diversity, resilience, and shared vision for inclusive and sustainable development. The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Bangkok, under the leadership of H.E. Mr. Darkey Africa, was delighted to contribute to this important occasion by showcasing selected South African products and welcoming the participation of South African wine companies. Their presence highlighted South Africa's premium wine industry, agricultural excellence, and growing opportunities for trade and cultural exchange with Thailand.

Joint Call on the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand by the Group of African Head of Missions

On 11 May 2026, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the Group of African Head of Missions for a joint call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Group of African Head of Missions comprised of
(1) Mr. Abderrahim Rahhaly Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco
(2) Mr. Darkey Ephraim Africa Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa
(3) Mrs. Hala Youssef Ahmed Ragab Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt
(4) Mr. Ashoor S A Omran Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Libya
(5) Mrs. Nancy Wanjiru Mwangi Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya
(6) Mrs. Juliet Oluwatosin Onyejiaka Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

During the discussion, both sides discussed ways forward for effective strategic implementation of the Thailand-Africa Initiative (TAI), which comprises of four key pillars, politic, economic, development and global strategic cooperations. This engagement underscored the shared commitment to deepening Thailand-Africa relations and expanding practical cooperation for mutual benefit.

Strengthening South Africa–Thailand Trade and Investment Partnership

H.E. Darkey Africa, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Suphajee Suthumpun, Minister of Commerce of Thailand, on Wednesday, 25 March 2026 at the Ministry of Commerce.

The meeting served as an important opportunity to advance South Africa–Thailand economic engagement, with discussions focusing on expanding bilateral trade and investment flows in a more balanced and strategic manner. Both sides exchanged views on enhancing market access and strengthening two-way trade, including promoting South African products in Thailand while supporting Thai businesses in leveraging South Africa as a gateway to the wider African market.

Discussions also highlighted opportunities to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, and regional supply chain connectivity, positioning both countries to benefit from stronger inter-regional linkages between Africa and Southeast Asia. Both parties agreed to expedite the establishment of the Thailand–South Africa Joint Trade Committee (JTC) within 2026, with a shared intention to elevate it to the ministerial level to strengthen policy coordination and implementation.

The meeting also explored prospects for future high-level exchanges, reaffirming a shared commitment to advancing a forward-looking partnership that delivers tangible economic benefits for both countries.

The Second Anniversary Celebration of the Launch of the Nelson Mandela Centre at Chulalongkorn University

The Second Anniversary Celebration of the Launch of the Nelson Mandela Centre at Chulalongkorn University was held on 20 March 2026 at Eastin Grand Hotel, Bangkok. H.E. Darkey Africa, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa, delivered the opening remarks together with other distinguished speakers, marking the occasion and reflecting on the enduring significance of Nelson Mandela’s legacy. The programme featured a virtual keynote session delivered by H.E. Dr Naledi Pandor, Former Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa. It also included a panel discussion featuring speakers from academia and the diplomatic community. The event brought together representatives from Chulalongkorn University, members of the diplomatic corps, including senior religious leaders, students, and distinguished guests to exchange perspectives on global issues of shared concern, including conflict, atrocity risks, and human security. As part of the event, the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa displayed portraits of Nelson Mandela and distributed selected promotional materials, contributing to the commemoration of his legacy and supporting the Centre's ongoing outreach and engagement. The celebration underscored the continued collaboration between the Embassy and Chulalongkorn University.
