UN Environment Programme in Asia Pacific Advancing sustainability in Asia-Pacific by promoting inclusive solutions to environmental issues.

In Asia Pacific, the UN Environment Programme operates through its Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and works in 41 countries in the region. We work with governments, local authorities, civil society, other UN entities, regional and international institutions, as well as the private sector to develop and implement cleaner and safer policies and strategies that catalyze efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduces degradation of the environment and risks to both humans and the environment.

🍲 Food carries more than nutrition. It carries traditions, recipes, memories and knowledge passed from one generation to the next. 👵🏽👧🏽

🌾 But climate change is threatening many of the crops, ingredients and food traditions that are part of cultures around the world.

💚 also means valuing the people, places and traditions behind every meal.

📷🧪 Chemicals are everywhere, from factories and construction sites to the products on our shelves. When they're poorly managed, they put people's health and the environment at risk.

The Global Framework on Chemicals Fund has approved nine new projects supporting 13 countries, including four in Asia and the Pacific 🌏

🇰🇭🇱🇦 Cambodia and Lao PDR will strengthen systems to track and publicly report industrial chemical releases
🇻🇺 Vanuatu will set up a national system for classifying and labelling chemicals
🇲🇾 Malaysia will join Brazil, Zimbabwe and Mauritius to improve chemical safety for construction workers through worker-led approaches

Together, the projects bring US$5.4 million in targeted support to help countries turn global commitments on chemicals into action on the ground.

🧪🌍 Chemicals are part of daily life, from food production and medicines to clothing and electronics. When chemicals and waste are poorly managed, however, they can harm human health and pollute the air, water and soil that ecosystems depend on.

Three years ago in Bonn, Germany, countries and stakeholders adopted the Global Framework on Chemicals: the Framework sets out five strategic objectives and 28 targets that cover the full lifecycle of chemicals, including products and waste. It brings together governments, the private sector, non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations, youth and academia.

📅 Coming up next is the Framework's First International Conference, which takes place 16–20 November 2026 in Geneva. 🇨🇭

🏡 Home is where sustainable development begins.

Today is , and this year's theme is Adequate Housing for All.

More than 1.1 billion people live in informal settlements worldwide, and conflict, disasters and climate change are making the housing crisis even harder for those with the fewest resources to recover. 🌍

Adequate housing is more than shelter. It is the foundation for health, dignity, opportunity and resilience. For homes to truly last, they also need to be environmentally sustainable, climate-resilient and culturally appropriate. 🌱

🌍 When nature suffers, so does humanity.

🔥 As the planet warms, more species are pushed toward the edge, and the damage doesn't stop with wildlife. One million species are threatened with extinction, and land degradation already affects around 3.2 billion people, or 40% of the world's population. 🌾💧

The good news? Nature is also one of the strongest allies for a safer future. 🌱 Protecting and restoring ecosystems, transforming food systems and scaling up investment in nature-based solutions can help bend the curve on biodiversity loss by the end of the decade.

🩵 If we can’t live without water, why are we poisoning our rivers?

💚 If we can’t live without forests, why are we cutting them down?

🤎 If we can’t live without soil, why are we stripping it of life?

We depend on nature, not the other way around. It's time we stop pushing our best ally to the brink.

🧽 From the dish soap by your sink to the products on store shelves, chemicals and waste are part of everyday life.

⚠️ But when they aren't managed well, they pollute air, soil and water. Pollution is the world's largest environmental risk factor for disease and premature death, estimated to cause at least 9 million deaths a year.

✅ The good news? Science shows a cleaner world is possible. A life cycle approach, from smarter product design to safer use and sound waste management, can protect people and nature while keeping economies growing.

🌍 Under the Global Framework on Chemicals, countries have agreed on 28 targets to be reached by 2030 or 2035. UNEP works with governments to develop the policies and regulations needed to get there.

🌊 Beneath the waves lies a world of countless species, many of which remain little known.

These ocean ecosystems are under pressure from the nature crisis, one of the three planetary crises facing the world today. Restoring them is key to protecting the biodiversity that people and the planet depend on. 🐠🪸

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), led by UN Environment Programme and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), invites everyone to help protect and revive ecosystems.

🎮 Start small: dive into a quick game, take on the nature crisis, and learn how to join in real life.

🛰️ More than 30 satellites are tracking methane from space, but data alone doesn't cut emissions.

Methane is around 80 times more powerful than CO₂ over 20 years, yet it stays in the atmosphere for only about a decade. That makes cutting it one of the fastest ways to slow global warming 🌍

A recent UNEP report shows how AI is helping turn detection into action. Through its Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory uses AI to spot major methane emissions and quickly alert governments and companies so they can act.

⚡ AI helps analysts process 12–15 times more data
🔍 Every AI-flagged detection is still verified by human experts
🚗 The resulting action has delivered a climate benefit comparable to removing the annual emissions of almost 24 million gasoline-powered cars

🍽️ More than 1 billion tonnes of food are wasted every year, while 645 million people faced hunger in 2025.

That's 19% of all food available to consumers, lost in homes, restaurants and shops. And most of it happens at home 🏠 Households account for 60% of all food waste.

The cost goes far beyond the plate. The land, water, energy and labour used to grow that food are wasted too, and food loss and waste generate 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions 🌍 Food waste is also a major source of methane, and cutting methane is one of the fastest ways to slow climate change.

This International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, UN Environment Programme and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are calling on governments, businesses, communities and individuals to act. Through the Food is Never Waste Coalition, they are working to halve food waste and reduce food loss by 2030.

Every meal saved counts 🥕 Plan your shopping, store food well, and use what you buy.
