Behind the Lens with our Head Mahout, P’Navin! 📹🐘

P’Navin loves capturing videos of our elephants as they go about their day, and some of the up-close footage we share here on social media is filmed by P’Navin himself!

In this video, we filmed P’Navin filming the elephants!

It’s something he really loves doing, and it allows us to share beautiful little moments of our elephants throughout the day as they socialise, play, explore, enjoy each other’s company - and, of course, make plenty of noise along the way!

And just look at those happy, excited tails in the air!

P’Navin has worked with elephants for over 20 years. He is a highly experienced and compassionate mahout, and his hard work, dedication, and understanding, play such an important role in giving our elephants the very best life they deserve.

Alongside P’Navin, we have our amazing team of mahouts (carers), who work incredibly hard every single day to feed and care for our ten rescued elephants.

So, thanks to P’Navin’s love of elephants and his passion for filming them, this enables us to share special little glimpses of our elephants' everyday lives with you all!

Ton Oi found a sandbag! 🐘😂

Honestly Ton Oi, what are we going to do with you?!!!

She's always up to mischief, and this time she spotted a sandbag in the pond and decided to pull it out!

At first, she couldn't quite get hold of it, wandered off, then returned a second time. This time she stepped further into the pond, grabbed one end and managed to pull it out.

Quite happy with herself, we thought she would run around and throw it everywhere, but she surprised us by throwing it in the air causing it to split open, then simply went on her way.

And yes, we need to get a new sandbag now!

We never know what she is going to do next, and whatever it is, she certainly keeps us all entertained and smiling!

We can’t guarantee that Ton Oi will find another sandbag to play with, but knowing her, she’ll probably be up to something!

Our Muddy, Noisy, Happy Herd! 🐘📣🥰

A great way to start the week! This is what it's all about!
Just look at this spectacular sight... our gorgeous, muddy herd of best friends enjoying each other's company... rumbling, trumpeting and roaring!

Wassana, Nong Fai, Boon Yen and Ton Oi always have something to say. They're fun, playful and it's fascinating to watch their herd dynamics too. The others often jostle for position to be right next to Wassana, who's such a friendly and popular elephant here at Hidden Forest.

This particular muddy spot, opposite our restaurant, is one of our elephants' favourite places to hang out, and they've been choosing to spend lots of time here lately. It's easy to see why, with all this fresh, thick, gloopy mud to play in!

And of course, this makes for fabulous photos and videos, too. The beautiful contrast between their gorgeous deep-grey skin and the rich, earthy terracotta colours of the mud makes these moments truly magical.

For our rescued elephants, a wonderful life is about so much more than just being safe. It's about having the freedom to make their own choices, deciding where they want to play, forming friendships and expressing their natural behaviours without fear or pressure.

And this is what life should look like for every rescued elephant... a whole lot of mud and a whole lot of adventure!

Sneaky Sudjai… stealing Ton Oi’s food! 🐘🌿😂

We’ve mentioned before that elephants can be very funny, and Sudjai is no exception. She may be a smaller elephant, but don’t let her size fool you. Sudjai can be very sneaky!

She has her own pile of grasses and banana trees to enjoy, but apparently Ton Oi’s food is much more tempting, and she loves to wander over and sneak some for herself! Sudjai actually dropped her banana tree to grab Ton Oi’s grasses, but Ton Oi was quick to grab her banana tree!

Sudjai has taken a long time to settle in and, given the severe cruelty she experienced before coming to us, it’s understandable that she has been wary of people. The scars on her back feet, where she was stabbed with spears, remain a reminder of her past, and it has taken patience, trust and time for her to feel safe and heal.

She has gradually made friends with many of the elephants here, and Ton Oi’s friendship has played a very special role in her life - but even the best of friends have their limits… especially when it comes to food!

But just look at how gentle they are with one another. There is no aggression, just two elephants peacefully grazing together. And for Sudjai, moments like this mean so much more than simply sharing food. They are a sign of how far she has come from a frightened elephant, to one who has found companionship, confidence and a sense of belonging within her elephant family.

And perhaps most importantly, she has learnt that life at Hidden Forest comes with plenty of food… even if it’s your friends’ food you prefer!

Ton Oi Asleep in the Mud! 🐘🥰💤

There’s not a lot happening in this video… because Ton Oi fell asleep!

This new pile of lovely, fresh, soft mud has become a favourite spot for our elephants to lie down and take a little nap.

You can see Boon Yen come into view, walking past quietly and carefully, looking almost as though she’s tip-toeing around Ton Oi so she doesn’t wake her!

It’s such a sweet, peaceful little moment, and one we love to see here at our sanctuary.

There’s no drama, excitement, loud trumpets or roars today!

Just Ton Oi, happily snoozing in the mud. Sometimes, the simplest moments really are the loveliest ones.

Boon Yen Sat on Her Bottom in the Mud for the Very First Time! 🐘🥰😂

We honestly couldn’t believe our eyes!

Boon Yen was standing with Ton Oi, both completely covered in mud, when Boon Yen suddenly decided to sit down on her bottom and started wriggling around! She actually looks like teenager in this video - you wouldn't think she is 59 years old!

She is a more serious elephant, slightly bossy with the others, and likes to think she is head of the herd. However, she has recently become very close with Ton Oi, and we all know how playful Ton Oi is! We think Ton Oi’s energy and personality is most certainly rubbing off on everyone around her.

Boon Yen was rescued in November 2024 after many decades of giving rides to tourists, and seeing her personality really begin to shine and watching her have so much fun, really is incredibly moving.

It’s moments like this that remind us just how much can change when an elephant finally has the freedom, friendship and security to be themselves.

And, watching her flourish within this little herd of five best friends - Wassana, Nong Fai, Wan Mai and Ton Oi - is nothing short of heartwarming.

Boon Yen - you deserve every single muddy moment!

The Beautiful Personalities of Free Elephants 🐘 🥰

Every elephant has a unique personality - just like every animal on Earth… and, just like every human too. No two personalities are exactly the same, and elephants are no different.

Here at Hidden Forest, we have a herd of ten elephants, and each one has their own very distinctive character. But there is one elephant who never fails to make us smile, and you all probably know who she is… Yes, Ton Oi!

Ton Oi is one of the funniest elephants we have ever known!

It took her two and a half years to become friends with Wassana, Boon Yen, Nong Fai and Wan Mai, and when she was finally accepted and welcomed into their group around four months ago, something incredible happened. We began to see a side of Ton Oi that we hadn't seen before.

She now trumpets, roars, squeaks, wiggles her head, spins around and gets very excited about being with her friends - creating a wonderful, playful energy that is incredibly special to watch.

A few days ago, when the pond was only half full, Ton Oi decided it was the perfect opportunity to bathe.

She lay down, kicked her feet in the air and thoroughly enjoyed splashing around, while the others stood patiently around her, waiting for their friend to finish playing.

Our rescued elephants were previously ridden, performed in shows, or forced to tolerate people rubbing mud on them and bathing in the water with them. So it is nothing short of spectacular to see them behaving like this.

They are simply free to be elephants, and their personalities are allowed to shine through.

This is what elephant bathing should look like.
And, this is what freedom looks like. 🐘❤

Should We Go In The Pond or Not? 🤔🐘💦

This is a much longer video than we usually post as the elephants were vocalising for around half an hour and we wanted to share as much as we could with you!

We clean the pond out regularly and over the weekend it was drained and refilled. Yesterday, the elephants saw the water had only filled up half way and they had a lot to say about this!

Wassana, Nong Fai, Ton Oi and Boon Yen were very curious and seemed unsure whether it was safe to go in at first. Wassana decided to be brave and stepped into the shallow end… but after standing there for a moment, she clearly changed her mind, turned around and came straight back out!

And that’s when the commotion really started! There was lots of running around with loud rumbles, trumpets and roars… what sounded very much like an elephant committee meeting about whether this new pond situation could be trusted!

It took quite a while before Nong Fai finally decided to go in. She turned around and immediately started splashing and slapping the water, encouraging everyone else to join her!

That was all the encouragement they needed… they all followed and the pond was suddenly full of excitement with everyone splashing about and playing together and being incredibly noisy! Look out for Wassana's cute back leg kicks too!

And this is what makes moments like this so very special. Our elephants have the freedom to choose, to play and communicate with one another, and the space to spend time together as a herd - just as rescued elephants should.

We have a very happy, very noisy herd of best friends simply enjoying life together. ❤

TON OI DOESN'T LIKE SHARING HER FOOD! 🐘😂

Ton Oi is honestly one of the funniest elephants we have ever known. She really is hilarious!

Sudjai was very quietly trying to creep forward and steal some of Ton Oi’s grass, but Ton Oi had other ideas…

Instead of moving away, she simply put her tail out and hit Sudjai on her head! 🤣

We've actually replayed the video in slow motion so you can see it clearly. Every time Sudjai swung her trunk forward, trying to sneak closer to the food, Ton Oi waved her tail in the air to gauge where she was and so she would back off!

Eventually Sudjai realised what was going on, stepped back, and carried on eating her own food.

Sudjai and Ton Oi have a lovely friendship, though clearly friendship has its limits where food is concerned!

This is one of the things we love so much about elephants. They have such incredible and individual personalities. When they are given freedom, good food, peace - and something that is just as important, friendship and companionship - you get to see these wonderful little moments of natural elephant behaviour every single day.

And, with Ton Oi… there is ALWAYS something funny happening!

(Oh, and the noise in the background is our rescued geese!)

NAM PAERNG ENJOYING A GOOD SCRATCH! 🐘🌿

One of the most beautiful things about watching our rescued elephants is seeing them make their own choices.

Nam Paerng found the perfect scratching tree… and enjoyed a really good scratch behind her ears and across her body. She even lifted her leg in the air to reach just the right spot!

You can hear her tough skin rubbing against the rough bark, which not only helps relieve an itch but also gently exfoliates her skin.

For elephants who have spent years being controlled by humans, these seemingly ordinary moments - choosing a tree, stopping for a scratch, exploring, resting, bathing, or simply wandering wherever they please - are so beautiful to see.

And, it's moments like this that make watching our rescued elephants enjoy their lives so incredibly rewarding. ❤
