Once a fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R (military) destination during the Vietnam War and developed into a family-oriented[citation needed] seaside destination. Foreign tourism to Thailand as a whole in 2007 amounted to 14.5 million visitors.[7]
Activities include playing golf (21 golf courses within 1 hour of Pattaya,) go-kart racing, and visiting different theme parks and zoos such
as the Elephant Village, where demonstrations of training methods and ancient ceremonial re-enactments are performed daily. The Vimantaitalay tourist submarine offers 30 minute trips underwater to see corals and marine life just a few kilometers offshore. Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden about 15 kilometers south of Pattaya is a 500-acre (2.0 km2) site of botanical gardens and an orchid nursery where cultural shows with trained chimpanzees and elephants are presented. The park also keeps several tigers and an assortment of birds to the delight of their guests. Home to the famous Walking Street, the unrivaled epicenter of Pattaya nightlife, literally packed with hundreds of neon-lit bars, nightclubs and brothels. A trip down Walking Street from Beach Road to Bali Hai Pier is an experience you will never forget. Walking Street is closed to vehicles from 6:00pm to 2:00am, Walking Street does provide some car parking areas at the Bali Hai end of the Street, from past experience its probably best to leave the car at home and get a taxi their instead. Walking Street hosts a number of seafood restaurants, international restaurants, live music venues, sports bars and many other forms of entertainment to tantalise you with. Some of the beer bars in Walking Street are great for sitting back and watching the world pass by, you can sit for hours watching this amazing street come to life as it’s filled with tourists, entertainers, expats and of course, Pattaya’s beautiful girls.
