👴👵 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀!
On 1 October, the world observes the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, established by the UN General Assembly to raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges associated with population ageing.
The theme for 2026, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” highlights the need to rethink and adapt systems to ensure that longer lives are accompanied by health, dignity, security, participation and opportunities for all. With the global population of people aged 60 and over projected to increase from 1.2 billion in 2025 to 2.1 billion by 2050, population ageing is an increasingly important issue across societies.
For social work, this calls for approaches that place older persons at the centre, recognising them not only as recipients of care and social services, but also as active members of families, communities and society. Social workers play an important role in promoting social inclusion, protecting rights and dignity, strengthening support systems, and fostering intergenerational solidarity.
As ASEAN societies continue to experience demographic change, strengthening the social work and social welfare workforce will be essential to building inclusive, age-friendly and resilient communities, where people can live longer lives with dignity and meaningful participation.
ATCSW joins the global community in recognising the contributions of older persons and supporting collective efforts towards a society for all ages.

On 29–30 September 2026, the ASEAN Training Centre for Social Work and Social Welfare (ATCSW), in collaboration with the Project for Human Resource Development on Social Work in ASEAN Region, JICA, held the “Expert Working Group Workshop on the Curriculum Development for Social Protection in ASEAN” in Bangkok, Thailand.
Social Protection is one of ATCSW’s core training courses. Following the latest delivery of the course in 2023, this workshop marked an important step towards developing and refining the curriculum for its future delivery, taking into account the evolving social protection context and needs of ASEAN Member States.
The workshop brought together an Expert Working Group comprising 17 specialists in social protection from government agencies, international organisations, and relevant institutions. The experts worked collectively to review, refine, and finalise the draft curriculum, with the aim of strengthening the content and relevance of the course for social protection practitioners across the ASEAN region.
ATCSW would like to express our sincere appreciation to the experts from DSWD Academy, Philippines, Ms. Janet P. Armas, Assistant Secretary; Ms. Marigrace D. Mateum, Division Chief; and Ms. Rizza Jane Francisco Azucena, Assistant Bureau Director, for joining us and sharing their valuable expertise throughout the workshop. We also extend our appreciation to Dr. Thaworn Sakunphanit, Advisor, Foundation for Research on Social Protection and Health (FRoSPaH), Thailand, and Mr. Samik Adhikari, Senior Economist, World Bank, for their valuable contributions to the curriculum development process.
ATCSW looks forward to continuing to strengthen its training programmes and promote knowledge exchange and capacity development in social protection across the ASEAN region.

On 3 September 2026, the ASEAN Training Centre for Social Work and Social Welfare (ATCSW) received a visit from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) team at the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS). The meeting provided an opportunity for both organisations to introduce their respective work and explore potential areas for future collaboration.
The ATCSW team was led by Mr. Chinchai Cheecharoen, Executive Director of ATCSW, together with Dr. Akiko Yokoyama, JICA Expert at ATCSW, and Dr. Chokchai Suttawet, Technical Advisor to the JICA Project. The IRC delegation was led by Mr. Antony Nolan, Deputy Director, Violence Prevention and Response Unit, accompanied by Ms. Naima Iqbal Cholan, Violence Prevention and Response Regional Lead, Asia, and Mr. Chakkrid Chansang, Protection and Rule of Law Technical Advisor, Asia.
During the meeting, IRC shared its humanitarian work supporting displaced and vulnerable populations in Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, including in the areas of health, education, livelihoods, protection, and access to justice. Both organisations exchanged views on the growing need to strengthen the role of social work in ASEAN, particularly in responding to the needs of refugees, displaced persons, and other vulnerable groups.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of recognising and strengthening the social service workforce, including those who perform social work functions without formally identifying themselves as social workers, as well as addressing the limited recognition of such work in some contexts. Both sides expressed interest in exploring opportunities to strengthen social work practice, networks, and humanitarian responses across the region.
ATCSW sincerely appreciates IRC for the valuable exchange and looks forward to exploring future collaboration to strengthen the role of social work in supporting vulnerable and displaced populations across ASEAN.
