Access to education is not the same for everyone.

In rural areas or underserved communities—whether in parts of Palestine, Tunisia, or Egypt—opportunities can be limited.
DIEM works to bring training closer to people, including those at risk of exclusion, ensuring that skills and opportunities are shared more equally across communities.

Because inclusion is not optional—it’s essential.

How can education better prepare the next generation of heritage professionals?
This was the key question explored during DIEM’s first stakeholder workshop in Palestine, where universities, public authorities and cultural organisations discussed how education and training can better respond to the needs of the cultural heritage sector.

Among the key insights that emerged:
👷 The sector needs more technical specialists and skilled professionals.
💻 Digital skills, project planning and practical conservation were identified among the most significant skills gaps.
🏛 Participants highlighted the importance of practical, on-the-job learning and short vocational courses to better connect education with professional practice.
🌍 Improving access to training also means addressing physical and digital barriers, making learning more inclusive and accessible.

These findings will contribute to the co-design of DIEM’s future learning activities, helping build more practical, inclusive and labour market-oriented training pathways across the Mediterranean.

How can cultural heritage become a driver of sustainable development?

This was one of the key questions explored during DIEM’s first stakeholder workshop in Egypt, where heritage professionals, academics and policymakers came together to discuss the future of heritage education, governance and management.
The workshop highlighted a shared message: protecting cultural heritage requires more than conservation alone. It calls for stronger governance, updated education and training, new professional profiles, and greater collaboration across institutions and sectors.
Among the main insights that emerged:

🏛 Heritage should be recognised as a cultural, social and economic asset—not a burden.
🎓 Education and training need to become more interdisciplinary, practical and better connected to labour market needs.
💻 Future professionals should develop competencies in digital heritage, heritage management, adaptive reuse and long-term conservation planning.
🤝 Sustainable heritage management depends on stronger cooperation between public authorities, academia, the private sector and local communities.

These findings reflect the perspectives shared by workshop participants and will contribute to the co-design of DIEM’s future learning activities, supporting more innovative, inclusive and sustainable approaches to cultural heritage across the Mediterranean.

What skills will shape the future of cultural heritage?
This was the key question explored during DIEM’s first stakeholder workshop in Valencia, Spain, where representatives from universities, museums, public authorities, NGOs and the private sector came together to discuss the future of education and training in the heritage sector.

The workshop highlighted a shared message: while professionals entering the sector are generally well prepared, the challenges facing cultural heritage are evolving—and so are the skills needed to address them.

Among the main insights that emerged:
🛠 Practical and operational skills remain a top priority.
💻 Digital competencies, together with management and entrepreneurship skills, are becoming increasingly important.
🎓 Flexible and recognised learning pathways, including micro-credentials and vocational qualifications, are gaining relevance.
🌍 Training should be more accessible and inclusive, ensuring opportunities for women, young people, rural communities, migrants and other underrepresented groups.

These findings reflect the perspectives shared by workshop participants and will contribute to the co-design of DIEM’s future learning activities, helping build training pathways that are practical, collaborative and aligned with the needs of the cultural heritage sector across the Mediterranean.
