In a medical breakthrough, Professor Mashudu Tshifularo and his team at the University of Pretoria have successfully performed the world’s first middle ear transplant using 3D-printed bones.

This pioneering procedure offers new hope for individuals suffering from conductive hearing loss caused by congenital defects, infections, trauma, or metabolic diseases.

The innovative surgery, initially performed in 2019 by the team, replaces the middle ear ossicles—hammer, anvil, and stirrup. And it has already transformed the lives of two patients, including one born with an underdeveloped middle ear.

Using 3D-printing technology, the bones are recreated with biocompatible titanium, ensuring a precise and safe reconstruction. The minimally invasive procedure is performed with an endoscope, significantly reducing risks such as facial nerve paralysis and scarring compared to traditional methods.

Professor Tshifularo, head of UP’s Department of Otorhinolaryngology, views this achievement as a testament to the power of innovation in medicine. “3D technology is allowing us to do things we never thought we could,” he stated.

While the procedure has shown promising results, the professor emphasized the need for sponsors and funding to further advance and scale this revolutionary technique.

Studies indicate that banning phones can improve learning outcomes, particularly for underperforming students. Furthermore, the negative effects of social media, especially on girls' mental health, underscore the urgent need for regulation.

Rallye Mathématique, c’est parti ! 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

🧑‍🔬La Cité des Sciences à Tunis, en partenariat avec l’Association Tunisienne des Mathématiques et des Arts (ATMA), organise la première édition du Rallye Mathématique, et ce, le dimanche 19 mai 2024 à partir de 10h.
L’objectif de ce rallye Mathématique est de résoudre des énigmes sur les nombres, la géométrie, les grandeurs et les mesures, ou la logique, tout en valorisant le travail en équipe, et ce, en impliquant les élèves dans un esprit de coopération afin de donner une image dynamique et positive aux mathématiques.
Il s’agit d’un rallye collaboratif au sein duquel les élèves devront s’organiser et coopérer pour résoudre un maximum de défis Mathématiques à explorer dans les différents espaces de la Cité des Sciences à Tunis et dans un temps record.
Ce rallye Mathématique est un concours qui s’adresse aux élèves du primaire, aux collégiens et aux lycéens qui aiment aller plus loin dans la réflexion sur les énigmes mathématiques. Ces élèves seront repartis en groupe de six et en quatre catégories différentes :
Catégorie 1 : 3ème primaire (3 élèves) - 4ème primaire (3 élèves) ;
Catégorie 2 : 5ème primaire (3 élèves) - 6ème (3 élèves) ;
Catégorie 3 : Collège : 7ème (2 élèves) - 8ème (2 élèves) - 9ème (2 élèves) ;
Catégorie 4 : Lycée : 1ère (2 élèves) - 2ème (2 élèves) - 3ème (2 élèves).

A la fin de ce rallye, les équipes gagnantes recevront des médailles d’or et une coupe pour leurs établissements scolaires. Les équipes participantes sont appelées à consulter le lien suivant et à remplir la fiche d’inscription pour réserver leurs places.
