In the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Ata, H.E. Mr. INAGAKI Hisao, Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, handed over new classrooms and a multipurpose hall to the Nasaleti School in Kolovai.
The handover ceremony was held in collaboration with the school's 200th anniversary on Friday, 19 June, and Ambassador Inagaki in his keynote address congratulated the school on its milestone and highlighted the role of education in nurturing a brighter future for everyone.
The new school building is part of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects or GGP, which aims to directly address basic needs in local communities.

H.E. Mr. INAGAKI Hisao, Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, was happy to have the Embassy's Culture Division join the 2026 Career EXPO hosted by the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development together with the Ministry of Education and Training of Tonga. The Ambassador is grateful for the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Regent Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala and His Royal Highness Prince Taufa'ahau Manumataongo Tuku'aho, who visited the Embassy's booth, which focused on the Government of Japan's Scholarship Program known as MEXT. Every year from May to June, the MEXT scholarship program is open for application. The Embassy's team is also thankful to all the students, parents and workers who stopped by its booth to explore possible opportunities of pursuing further studies in Japan.

On 30th April, over 1400 students and teachers at Tonga High School actively participated in an evacuation drill, supported by The Supporting Organization of JOCV in Saga together with Terra People Association and Dr. Matsumaru of Toyo University. They were praised for completing the evacuation within the first five minutes! Dr. Matsumaru and Principal ‘Ana Veikoso emphasized the importance of sharing the evacuation route and procedure with family members beforehand as real disasters strike without any notice.

Today commemorates the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes, and it was a profound honor for the Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, H.E. Mr. INAGAKI Hisao, to join the Ministry of Lands, Survey, Spatial Planning, and Natural Resources of Tonga in remembering the lives lost due to earthquakes. In his keynote address, the Ambassador of Japan reminded the audience of the importance of preparedness before a disaster strikes. As we observe this significant day, we are called upon to "Remember. Protect. Build Disaster Resilience." His Excellency closed his remarks by reiterating Japan’s commitment to share its profound experience and understanding of disaster preparedness with the Kingdom of Tonga.

Yesterday, H.E. Mr. INAGAKI Hisao, Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, handed over the new evacuation centre and community hall to the delightful community of Koulo in Ha'apai. In recognition of highly vulnerable status of communities in the Ha'apai Islands group, the Embassy granted the sum of over TOP$300, 000 through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) for the construction of this new evacuation centre to provide refuge for people during natural disasters. Ambassador INAGAKI emphasized the significance of the building by stating "Last week's tsunami warning was a stark reminder of the need for the evacuation centre," which is the only one in the village.
