EUROPE’S EMERGING STARS SET FOR SHOWCASE AGAINST THE MCC AT ICONIC GROUNDS
Some of Europe’s brightest cricketing prospects are set to take centre stage this April, with elite women’s and men’s squads heading to two of the sport’s most storied venues for a series of fixtures against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
In a landmark opportunity for European Associate Member players, top female and male cricketers from across the continent will gain rare access to world class facilities, top tier coaching, and the unique challenge of playing as combined European XIs – alongside players they usually face as rivals.
Women’s Europe XI to Feature at Lord's
The ICC Europe Women’s XI will step out at the “Home of Cricket” on 17 April, forming part of the MCC’s annual Women’s Day celebrations at Lord’s. The squad then heads to the picturesque Wormsley Estate on 18 April for a second fixture.
The back to back matches will test the squad’s ability to adapt quickly to English conditions while forging cohesion in a newly assembled team. Supporting them is an all female coaching staff made up of Level 3 and Level 4 coaches—an important milestone for high performance women’s cricket in Europe.
Norway’s Anushka Gorad captured the excitement felt across the squad:
“Playing at Lord’s is a dream come true. I’m incredibly grateful to the ICC for the opportunity and thrilled to experience it with the rest of the Europe Women’s XI. It’s especially exciting to line up alongside players I’ve competed against in the past.”
Men’s U23 Europe XI to Face MCC in Four Match T20 Series
Later in the month, the ICC Europe Men’s U23 XI will assemble for four T20 fixtures against the MCC on 30 April and 1 May at Wormsley. The 16 player squad represents 13 countries, featuring a blend of rising stars and players, many of whom have already appeared in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers.
The series offers meaningful early season preparation, particularly with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup European pathway beginning this summer. With sub regional qualifiers A, B, and C approaching from mid-May onwards, the opportunity to face high calibre opposition under pressure is expected to sharpen skills and readiness for the months ahead. Once again, the group will be supported by a world class backroom team, made up of ICC Level 3 and ECB Level 4 coaches, ensuring these players develop their games under the guise of some of the best coaches on the continent.
On these marquee fixtures for the region, ICC Europe’s Regional Development Manager Andy Wright commented:
“To have 17 of our 32 Associate Member Nations represented in the two camps and sets of fixtures is a great testament to the growth of the game in Europe. We’re always looking to provide new opportunities for the best young players in the region. Our thanks also must go to the MCC team for the opportunity to compete at such historic grounds against such a wonderful club. We can’t wait to see the players show their stuff now.”
